This earthquake occurred off Alaska's Aleutian Islands.

The following is a release by the United States Geological Survey, National Earthquake Information Center: A major earthquake occurred about 65 km (40 miles) S of Little Sitkin Island, Alaska or about 2205 km (1370 miles) WSW of Anchorage, Alaska at 11:43 PM MST yesterday, Nov 16, 2003 (8:43 PM AHST in Alaska). The magnitude and location may be revised when additional data and further analysis results are available. A tsunami warning is in effect for the coastal areas from Sand Point to Attu and from Kodiak to Sand Point, Alaska. There have been no reports of damage.

Wow, 7.5. That's pretty up there. Also a tsunami? Man, that's really bad for those people. They've got my prayers...

Saw tsunami warnings posted for the entire west coast very late last night, but didn't see any advisory attached. Thought maybe it was a fluke or test.

Looks like they upped the magnitude. Earthquakes are one of the things I am most scared of mainly because they don't issue earthquake watched and/or warnings.

It does indeed look like it was upgraded, higher 0.3 of a point. They usually are "upgraded," the more intense they are.

Difficult to tell if it will ever be possible to forecast earthquakes enough to issue Earthquake Watches and Earthquake Warnings.

Haven't had a big one in CA for awhile. We've had enough natural disasters during the past month (from the fires to the 18 inch hail storm last week), so I think mother nature is giving us a break in that area.

I do think eventually the research (in about 5-10 years) will come far enough for earthquake "watches" to be issued. (Instead of these 60%-80% chance of having a magnitude 7.0+ in SoCal in the next 20 years type predictions)
