King, I THINK I know what Tom (Coldfront_77) may
be getting at (correct me if I am wrong, Tom!).
I went to my first Skywarn class in August '03. They
sent me a certification card as "official" with a spotter
ID number, a few weeks afterwards. Now, I
don't have the knowledge of weather as you
do, and, I kinda felt like one class didn't make me
ready to be "official". So, I grabbed another class,
the following October. I STILL think that I should grab
another class, and, I am just waiting for another one,
close to home. Heck, the class is fun, you meet
weather nuts, and, our speaker from the NWS Nashville
office, Jerry Orchanian, is a blast, anyways, so why
not do a few classes? I think what he's saying is,
some of us (and, I'm not down on myself, I just know
that I NEED to know more!) need to know storm
systems better than maybe others do.
Maybe that's what Tom was getting at?
Annete, that is basically what I mean. It seems as though those teaching the class expect everyone even with very good knowledge about meteorology to understand fully what is and isn't a severe thunderstorm, etc. After all, they wouldn't have Storm Spotter Training Classes for anyone on the "meteorological interest spectrum," if you will.

Congratulations to you, too... Tom. Didn't mean to ignore you.

:congrats: Congrats Harry and Tom!!!! :congrats:
I received an e-mail last week from our coordinator in Paducah who said there's no set minimum age, but generally driving age - 16. Basically they'll take anyone mature enough, 14 y/o included.
I attended Basic class last night here in Evansville. Btw, wore my Storm2K sweatshirt! Got there 10 mins early, and it was already standing room only!! They ran out of booklets and everything. (I, of course, had already printed it off months ago from their website. lol)
My favorite part was identifying the difference between a wall cloud, shelf cloud, roll cloud, and scud cloud. I finally got it! duh!
We also saw some cool video of spotters who got caught in a microburst followed by hail. Sweet!
I want to do the Advanced class. Anybody been there, done that?

Gotcha, Tom - I thought I might relate to what
you were saying.
Hey, Donna - after my NEXT Basic class, I might be
interested in an Advanced class. But, you know,
I never see that offered, around here. Seems
they just offer Basic for folks in the community.
Our local NWS reps might could help us with that question.

A much belated congratulations to both Harry and Tom!!!
I believe our class was a combination of the basic and advanced course as we were also handed out the advanced booklet. There were a number of younger family members present in out class here. I don't think any of them were over 15(it definitely was not a babysitting issue either). I will definitely be going back next year if I can fit it into my schedule. What is this about cards and spotter numbers? We didn't get that at our class did we Suzi?

Basically the same thing here as well David. Which of course mine being (Cleveland, OH).

I was just reading about some seminars here for the summer. I have wanted to do this for along time but never got the chance. I will be attending some near me this year. I think my county is even doing one. I will be going through the Pittsburgh office. Any information from anyone who has gone through the PIT office is welcome. Thanks!!
