Weather in New York?

#1 Postby Gord_on_snow » Tue Mar 30, 2004 4:11 pm

Wonder if you can help me?

I'm coming to New York in three weeks time to take a test that will enable me to teach in the US when i move to Ohio in August. I've never been out of Europe before so am quite excitied.

What is the weather like in New York in mid April. Here in the UK, we mainly hear about what is happening in the southern states at this time of year on our weather forums, so i'm not sure what to expect when i arive in New York. I hear you are all lovely people over there by the way!! :D

Well I welcome you to the United States.
For this week, parts of New York will see rain showers. The old New England saying is "April Showers bring May Flowers". This plus being from New England myself is true. The Northeast has had a wet cold winter, and this seems to be the on going conclusion as to the majority of April.
Based on forecasts from the Climate Prediction Center, it looks like a normal precipitation pattern. This with average temperatures for April.
You can go to the National Weather Service and recieve 6 day forecasts for the city your going to be located in, or just go to http://www.usweatherwatchers.com where I post forecast updates that normally cover a 3 to 4 day period. In the menu, you can type in the city of interest to receieve the 6 day forecast.
Good luck, and I hope to see you again!

Best of luck on your test gord!

I have either lived in NY or NJ during my lifetime. As Bob said, "April showers bring May showers" and that is true! April is quite rainy and we have warm and cool days. A raincoat is definately in order and I'd also pack a combination of long and short sleeved shirts.

Hey there Gord! I am in Ohio myself right now. What part of Ohio do you plan on moving to?

As far as your question about NY weather in Mid April. It can vary from cold and rainy to warm and dry this time of the year. Typically temps are mild this time of year however they do tend to get once in a while Backdoor coldfronts that drop in from the due north or NE bringing with them a raw east to northeast wind off the colder atlantic making it damp and chilly. No worries about snowstorms either this time of year. When i can get more info off the models and such i will relay them to this post for you and let you know what i think.

Thank you for your replies. I shall remember a woolly hat, a teeshirt and a brolly, (thats umbrella to you!).

King of Weather, I shall eventually be living in Columbus, i know Ohio is a big state though. I'm taking the test in New York becasue its the easiest city for us Brits to get to. Tons of flights there every day...been very awkward trying to book one...New york obviously a popular place for us to go!

King is actually near Columbus...I'm living in N KY but am in Cincy today on a brief day trip...anything can happen in Columbus this time of year, they even got snow flurries out there yesterday I think (?). I have personally seen temps range from mid 70's to upper 40's during the daytime, and be ready because we usually get one more minor (little/no accumulation) snow event in April here (or at least have been and the streak continued today...).

You tell me all of us, and we've just seen our first thunderstorm of the year here in the north of England on April 2nd, which is very early for us. So i suppose anything is possible wherever you are!

Flying out to New York on Thursday and arriving at JFK on Thursday night after a long flight and a whole afternoon hanging around London Heathrow!

Anyway, i've been looking into what weather i might have there next weekend, and it looks like i could be lucky. After a wet week it looks mainly dry and warmish at the weekend, (although the forecast is actually having the UK warmer while i'm away). An i might catch the next batch of rain as i prepare to fly home next Monday.

Whatever the weather, my first ever time out of Europe, i'm nervous and excited..been preparing lots for the test and feel ok about it, but more work to do!

So weathewise, looks very similar to the weather we've been having here and may catch some rain.

I hope you have a wonderful trip and I wish you the best of luck on your test!

You're right, I think that you are going to be very lucky with the weather in NY. I hope that you get a chance to do alittle sight-seeing. Are you coming with anyone?

No, couldn't afford for my wife to come with me, so she has to stay here and i have to go on my own, which is very daunting for someone who has only just got used to a small UK city!...to make up for it, i've promised to take her when we are living in the US.

When the test has finished, i still have one and a half days before i fly home, so i will certainly be having a good gander about the place! And trying some of the food, particularly the cheesecake, we get New York cheesecake over here, and i love it to bits, but it is apparently a poor imitation of the real thing! And i hear the portions are much larger over there!

Sorry, getting rather off topic there!

I'm sure that it will be alittle intimidating for you, but perhaps you can meet up with some of the others that will be taking the test with you. Either way, you won't know which direction to go in first! Take lots of pictures. :D
