State: health concerns over Cypremort water
CYPREMORT POINT, La. (AP) — State health officials are warning people to stay out of the water at this popular coastal community for the time being.A new Department of Health and Hospitals report says taking a dip at the popular spot on Vermilion Bay could make some people sick.
The state began its summer sampling of the water at the Point, Grand Isle and Fountainbleu State Park last month, according to the DHH Web site.
The no swimming advisory was issued this weekend because of a "potential health risk," particularly to those in poor health.
Water samples along a three-mile stretch were tested for fecal contamination, according to health officials.
"The presence of enteric bacteria is an indication of fecal contamination, which may come from stormwater runoff, livestock, pets, wildlife or human sewage," the report said.
A spokeswoman for the St. Mary Sheriffs Office said signs along the beach warn swimmers.
