Hardin County authorities say a woman was killed when a tornado barrelled across the area this afternoon.
In a live telephone report at 6pm, Hardin County Chief Deputy Kenny Davenport confirmed the death. Davenport told KFDM the woman was killed when high winds caused two trees to fall onto a home on FM 2593 off of FM 92 at about 4:30 p.m. Tuesday in northern Hardin County near the Tyler County line.
Authorities say four people were in the home when the tornado struck. A 73-year-old woman was killed and three other people in the house suffered minor injuries including one person who was blown through a window.
The Red Cross is opening a shelter at Freedom Fellowship Church at FM 92 and FM 1122 in Hardin County.
The tornado caused widespread damage across a number of counties including Hardin, Tyler, Jasper and Newton Counties.
Authorities report another home destroyed 5 miles south of Burkeville on Highway 87 between Burkeville and Newton. No word yet on whether anyone was injured.
In Jasper County, Sheriff Billy Rowles says there is tornado damage in the Roganville area near Kirbyville.
He says there are a number of trees down and he says deputies are trying to get through the debris to find out if anyone has been injured or homes damaged. A shelter has been opened at Central Baptist Church in Kirbyville.
And in Southern Tyler County, Sheriff Jesse Wolf tells KFDM news he is checking out reported damage near Fred off FM 92.
He says there are power lines down. So far, no reports of any other major damage.
The emergency management coordinator for Jasper, Newton and Sabine counties said authorities believe three tornadoes hit the town of Kirbyville within minutes of one another tonight. He says as many as four tornadoes struck Hardin County.
KFDM News has a number of crews covering the weather damage. More details on 6 News Tonight at ten or whenever new information becomes available.

Debris from home struck by tornado off FM 92 in northern Hardin County. 73 year old woman died at the scene.
The Hardin County Sheriff's Department tonight tells KFDM News it was not one but several tornadoes that tore across the county killing a woman and destroying homes. State troopers say Lola Crawford died when a tornado uprooted two oak trees that crashed onto her home. Authorities tell us she was 73 years old. Three other people were inside the home off Farm Road 2937 near FM 92 in northern Hardin County, near the Tyler County line. Those three people survived, including one person who was blown out of the house by the tornado.
The tornado moved through quickly, uprooting trees and knocking down power lines.
Thomas Eason/Victim's Neighbor:
"The wind was kind of blowing, the electric went out and then we heard these ambulances stuff."
It left behind several miles of destruction near FM 92 and FM 2937.
Trooper Richard Nelson/DPS:
"There's a house that's blown completely apart."
The storm destroyed at least nine mobile homes. Strong winds lifted this one off the ground.
Sally MacDonald/KFDM News:
"Two large oak trees fell on each side of the trailer. There were four people inside here at the time of the tornado. Three made it out okay, but one woman was trapped."
Emergency crews worked for nearly an hour to free the elderly woman. Family and friends watched helplessly nearby.
Shirley Burns/Victim's Niece:
"If I'd been around my phone. I wasn't there. She's my mom's baby sister. I just want to get in there and try to help."
The woman never made it out. Witnesses say one of the trees crushed the side of the home where she was sitting.
Thomas Eason/Victim's Neighbor:
"She was a real nice lady. We had known her all our lives."
Trooper Richard Nelson says the three people who made it out have some cuts and scrapes.
Trooper Richard Nelson/DPS:
"They were on the porch and thrown out into the yard, and one of the people in the house that the fatality was in was thrown out of the house."
What's left of the home are only pieces of debris. In the dark it's difficult to see the path of destruction the tornado took, leaving families with little else to do than hold onto each other and wait for the morning.
A shelter has been opened in Hardin County for people who need a place to stay. It's located at the Freedom Fellowship Church on the corner of FM 92 and 1122. Volunteers at the shelter tell Channel Six they have enough supplies and do not need any more donations at this point.

From the looks of the radar its gonna be a long nite there. If you are in the path of these dangerous storms u may want to consider taking shelter now rather than wait for a tornado warning to be issued. This means getting in the strongest part of your house..i would suggest a basement but I doubt if anyone down there has one. Any tornadoes that form could be fast moving as well as powerful.
