Jasper County Judge Joe Folk and Newton County Judge Truman Dougharty have issued disaster declarations following several tornadoes that caused widespread damage. The state of disaster will remain in effect for no more than 7 days, unless county commissioners extend the declarations. Investigators say at least three tornadoes struck homes in Kirbyville within minutes Tuesday afternoon. Tornadoes also caused damage in several parts of Newton County. There were no deaths or serious injuries reported. At the height of the storm, about 20,000 people in the region had lost power. At noon Wednesday, fewer than 500 people remained without power. Stay with KFDM News at noon, 5 and 6 for the very latest on the tornadoes and their aftermath.

My brother in Jasper County must be one of those 500 as he still doesn't have power.
