Tornadoes w/ heavy damage in Mississippi tonight!

#1 Postby SouthernWx » Sat Jan 08, 2005 12:46 am

As I've warned on the various wx boards the past several years....tornadoes can and do occur in the deep south during winter months. Here's another vivid example from earlier this evening:

Confirmed tornadoes in the Hattiesburg, Purvis, and Tylertown Mississippi areas...several homes were destroyed. A possible tornado caused heavy damage to four homes in the city of Jackson, Mississippi this evening. Another possible tornado caused damage just NE of Meridian, MS.

Here's the latest storm reports from SPC (as of 12 a.m. EST):

Indeed. Here's a fun fact for you: Tornadoes have been recorded every day of the year somewhere in the world (Predominately the U.S.)

Tornado touched down some 6-8 miles from my home. Pretty close considering. The weather was really bad last night for about an hour. Torrential rainfall upwards of 2.5 inches. Gusty wind, but not more than about 35 mph. Glad it stayed a little to my northwest.

You were very lucky, it could have been alot worse. Thankfully it was a smaller, shorter lived outbreak
