May 13th...

1866 - Tornado destroys a toll bridge near Barnet VT.

1930 - Only official US hail death occurred on this date near Lubbock Texas. Farmer caught in open field was killed.

1975 - Tennis-ball size hail at Wernersville PA. Hail accumulated to a depth of 10 inches.

1980 - F3 Tornado ripped directly through the center of Kalamazoo MI, killing 5 and injuring 79. 1200 people were left homeless. An interesting thing occurred as the tornado passes directly over the American Bank, causing a pressure drop of 0.59 inches. The pressure drop in a tornado is fortunately spread over a few seconds, which give most buildings and homes time to equalize the air pressure. Unfortunately, a direct hit by tornado winds usually blows most homes apart, so the affect of the pressure drop is irrelevant.

1981 - Massive tornado destroys 90 percent of Emberson TX. Victims reported seeing a massive wall of debris instead of a funnel. A man in a bathtub was blown 1/4 of a mile and a 1500 pound recreational vehicle was blown 500 yards. 30 people were injured, but miraculously no one was killed.

1982 - 15-20 inches of snow near Ft. Collins CO.

1986 - Kentucky State Trooper car hit by lightning as he was on patrol near Carrolton. The strike burned a hole in trunk lid and rear tires. The trooper was unhurt.

1987 - 95 in Sioux City Iowa setting a record.

1990 - 4 to 8 inches of rain fell in New Orleans between 7am and noon.

1995 - Severe weather outbreak. Wind gust to 136 mph at Peru IN. 184 reports of severe weather including three dozen tornadoes.

1996 - Windstorms in Bangladesh killed between 500 and 1,000, injured more than 30,000, and left 100,000 homeless. More than 80 villages with 10,000 homes were destroyed. As many as 22 people died in one family. At least a portion of these windstorms was tornadic.

May 16th...

1874 - 138 people were killed when a dam broke in Williamsburg, Massachusetts.

1924 - Blitzen, Oregon, set the state's record highest May temperature of 108°. Pelton Dam OR would tie this record on the 31st in 1986.

1946 - Severe hailstorm at San Antonio caused $5 million in damage. 20 people were injured.

1952 - 80 mph canyon winds hit Salt Lake City and Ogden, causing $1 million in damage. High winds gust to 92 mph at Hill AFB in Utah.

1989 - 20 tornadoes across the south central United States including an F4 tornado near Brackettsville TX and an F3 tornado that killed one person at Jarrell TX. A twister at Cleburne TX caused $30 million damage. Softball size hail fell at Shamrock TX. There were 180 reports of large hail and damaging winds.

1991 - Hail 5 inches in diameter at Wichita KS.

1995 - The U.S. set a new monthly tornado record in May, 1995 with 408 twisters reported. May and June of 1995 were marked by a very stormy weather pattern across the central part of the USA, which continued into July. In general, the number of tornadoes reported in the USA has been increasing in recent years. But it doesn't necessarily mean we're having more tornadoes. New National Weather Service Doppler radars mean forecasters are spotting twisters that might have gone unreported in the past. Also, more and more people are capturing small tornadoes on video and are likely to report them. Reports of small tornadoes, but not of major twisters, have increased in recent years. The many tornadoes in May and June 1995 gave scientists who were taking part in the Vortex Project more storms to study. On this date, Project VORTEX scientists used their "Doppler on Wheels" to record an incredibly close-up look at the anatomy of an F3 tornado near Hanston KS.

1997 - From record low to record high on the same day. At Sioux City IA, the morning low of 33 set a record while the temperature soared to a record-tying high of 91 in the afternoon. Other record highs across the country on this warm date included San Francisco, CA (city) with 94, Phoenix, AZ with 106 and Hastings, NE with 91. Meanwhile, record low temperatures were recorded across the Midwest, Southeast and Plains that morning, including 33 at Lexington KY and 35 at Louisville KY. It was 32 in Cincinnati OH to establish a record, breaking the old mark by 4 degrees.

1997 - 3.2 inches of snow fell in Marquette MI bringing their seasonal accumulation of snow to 272 inches to establish the all-time record seasonal snow total for Marquette County Airport. The previous record had occurred just the previous winter when 251.4 inches fell. It was also the 5th consecutive day with measurable snow, setting the record for consecutive days with measurable snow during the month of May. While mid-May snow is unusual, it's not the latest in the season it has ever snowed at Marquette. The latest measurable snow there is 0.2 inches on June 2, 1910. The latest date with at least 1-inch of snow is May 29, 1947 with 2.1 inches of snow falling.

May 20th...

1877 -- A tornado killed one person when it hit a church at the start of services nine miles south of Marion.

1894 -- A record late snow of two to eight inches whitened parts of central and eastern Kentucky. Lexington KY received six inches of snow.

1911 -- The first official weather observation was taken at the brand new Weather Bureau (now the National Weather Service) station in Fort Wayne at 7am, and was telegraphed to Washington DC.

1916 -- A tornado hit Codell, Kansas. On May 20, 1917, another tornado hit the same town. Then on May 20, 1918...the same town was hit by yet another tornado

1957 -- A tornado touched down to the southwest of Kansas City and traveled a distance of seventy-one miles cutting a swath of near total destruction through the southeastern suburbs of Ruskin Heights and Hickman Mills. The tornado claimed the lives of forty-five persons, and left hundreds homeless. It was the worst weather disaster of record for Kansas City. About all that remained of one house was a small table and a fish bowl atop, with the fish still swimming about inside the bowl, rather unconcerned.

1987 -- Thunderstorms in southern Texas produced grapefruit size hail, near the town of Dilley ("by dilly"), and produced wind gusts to 73 mph at Lake Amistad. The large hail broke windows, killed small animals, and damaged watermelon. Thunderstorms developing along a warm front produced severe weather from Indiana to the Dakotas. Thunderstorms produced baseball size hail at Denver IA, and wind gusts to 80 mph in southern Henry County IL.

1988 -- Thunderstorms in the south central U.S. produced wind gusts to 70 mph at Omaha, NE, and wind gusts to 80 mph at Midland and Dallas, TX. Temperatures in California soared into the 90s and above 100 degrees. San Jose CA reported a record high of 97 degrees.

1989 -- Pre-dawn thunderstorms produced large hail in eastern Oklahoma and northwestern Arkansas. Later in the morning thunderstorms in North Carolina produced dime size hail at Hanging Dog. Thunderstorms also produced severe weather from the Lower Mississippi Valley to the Central Plains Region later that day and night, with baseball size hail reported around Lawn, Novice and Eola TX.

1990 -- Thunderstorms produced severe weather across the southeastern quarter of the nation through the day and night. Severe thunderstorms spawned six tornadoes, including one which injured two persons at Algoma, MS, and another which injured nine persons at Rogersville, MO. There were 119 reports of large hail or damaging winds. Thunderstorms produced baseball size hail at Houston MO and damaging winds which killed one person at Toccoa GA.

The Minnesota Temperature

#137 Postby Aslkahuna » Tue May 20, 2003 2:43 pm

contrast was undoubtedly the result of a stationary front lying across the State with Duluth getting cold east winds off the cold waters of Lake Superior while to the south and west southerlies were bringing in hot air. For those of us familiar with the SFO Bay Area though, it's not at all uncommon for downtown San Francisco to be in the mid 50's to low 60's while Sacramento,100 miles inland, is 95-105F.
