From my experience and school days, I always remember that towards the end of August we get a bit of a cool down and sopme rainy weather. Labor Day weekend is usually back to summer but not torrid and then just in time for back to school we get summer's last gasp. September is usually a nice month - warm but not stifling hot with high dew points and humidity. I'd say that from NY (but not upstate) through MD and even the coastal parts of New England we really follow the calendar as far as the seasons go. It's like they happen on cue. We'll get a taste of things to come in the middle of the season but we really do enjoy the best of what all of the seasons have to offer.

In upstate NY and the northern parts of New England like Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine they start to see hints of fall towards the end of August, beginning of September with some leaves changing already.

I know all about what heat is like in summer. This is what the western Suburbs of Sydney was like last december. which is basically the climate I get

I really wish the NWS would put an archive of the statements they release for Salt Lake City. The one they issued was more detailed, but I guess this will do; it gets the point across:

THE AVERAGE MONTHLY TEMPERATURE OF 83.1 MAKES THIS THE SECOND WARMEST JULY...AND THE ALL TIME SECOND WARMEST MONTH...EVER. THE WARMEST JULY...AND WARMEST MONTH EVER...OCCURRED IN 2003 WITH AN AVERAGE MONTHLY TEMPERATURE OF 83.4.

THE AVERAGE MONTHLY MINIMUM TEMPERATURE OF 69.6 SET A RECORD FOR WARMEST ALL TIME AVERAGE MONTHLY MINIMUM TEMPERATURE. THE PREVIOUS RECORD WAS 68.8 IN JULY 2003.

In addition, something not mentioned, is that we tied the record for the third-longest streak of 95+ days on record at 19 (July 12-July 30). But as you can see from above, it was the low temperatures that really killed us this time. And note that the third-hottest July on record was in 2002. That means that the three hottest Julys (and months) on record here were in 2003, 2006, and 2002 (in order). Truly phenomenal...

We also had 9 days of 100+ degree days, including 1 streak of 5 in a row, but neither of these is anywhere near a record, although they're still above average (for example, in 2003, we had a record streak of 10 days with 100+ temperatures). Our high low this month was 79; our record is 80, set also in 2003.

Today, DFW has reached a high of 102°F at 4:00PM before drastically dropping to 85°F a 1/2 hour later. And some rain was falling.....finally!!!

Another record set by Salt Lake City was that last month was the only month ever in history where the temperature didn't drop to 60 or below. That's never happened before, and the coolest night of July was 62.

Where I live, the nights were warm too, and the temperature never dropped below 40. Extremely unusual weather all over the country it seems.

The highest temperature here was 102*F.

A Heat Advisory has been issued for residents in Oklahoma, Northern TX, East TX and Louisiana. None are issued for the immediate North Texas region, however a Red Flag Warning has been issued for the western 1/4 of North Texas, generally along and west of a line of Gainesville, Decatur, Weatherford, Glen Rose, Stephenville, and Hamilton line. This does not include the Dallas/Ft. Worth metroplex. (Thank goodness.)

OK, I take it back, the NWS has issued a Heat Advisory for the Dallas/Ft. Worth area, other cities included are Sherman, Waxahachie, Cleburne, Denton, and McKinney. Other areas included and overlapped by a Red Flag Warning are Gainesville, Decatur, and Weatherford.

The only reason is that the high for the DFW area is 104*F.
