May 31st...

1830 - Tornado at Shelbyville TN turned the town into "a heap of ruins and killed 5 people. A book was blown 7 miles by the twister.

1889 - One of the greatest weather related disasters in United States history occurred in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. Two days of very heavy rains caused the dam at the South Fork Fishing and Hunting Club 14 miles away and 450 feet above Johnstown in Cambria County to burst, sending a wall of water 75 feet high and one half mile wide down the Little Conemaugh River. The entire lake emptied into the valley of the river in just 36 minutes, flowing with the force of Niagara Falls. There were warnings during the day by telegraph, but most people in Johnstown believed that the dam couldn't fail. The huge wave of water and debris smashed into Johnstown at 4:07 p.m., destroying most of the town as well as its neighboring communities. The center of town was wiped away. Survivors reported seeing a 35-foot wall of what appeared to them as debris, including uprooted trees, houses, train cars, animals and people crashing toward them. Much of the debris was trapped behind a stone bridge, which dammed the water into a lake 30 feet deep where much of the town had been. By nightfall, the debris would catch fire, and the conflagration would claim as many as 80 more victims who were trapped in the heap of rubbish and burned alive. The story of the disaster was flashed around the country. The nation poured its heart out to the victims of the Johnstown flood, sending money, relief supplies and volunteers to the stricken area. Clara Barton and her newly formed Red Cross organization was instrumental in restoring the necessities of life to victims of the disaster. More than 2200 people died in the disaster. Bodies were still being uncovered as late as 1906. The 1889 flood led to vastly improved flood control and warning systems, but Johnstown would once again fall victim to a disastrous flood in 1977, when 77 people were killed.

1941 - Burlington, Kansas records 12.59 inches of rain in 24 hours to set the state's record.

1961 - Late freeze did severe damage to crops in New England. The temperature in Burlington VT dropped to 25F.

1982 - Wettest May ever for parts of northern Texas and Oklahoma. Wichita Falls TX established record with 13.22 inches. Oklahoma City recorded 12.07 inches for the month to set a record.

1985 - An outbreak of 41 tornadoes, including 27 in Ohio and Pennsylvania, killed 89 people and did $550 million in damage. It was the worst tornado outbreak in Pennsylvania history. Another concentration of twisters hit parts of Ontario in Canada. There were nine more killer tornadoes that day. The most violent tornado carved a 47-mile path from Ravenna Arsenal OH to Mercer PA, a distance of 41 miles. 18 people were killed and 310 injured by this F5 tornado. An airplane wing was transported 10 miles by the storm from the airport at Hermitage to Mercer.

1991 - May 1991 was the warmest May on record in Washington DC. The city also observed a record 11 days of 90-degree heat.

1998 - During the afternoon of May 31, 1998, lines of severe thunderstorms formed and moved rapidly east across New York and Western New England. Several of these storms became tornadic over Saratoga, Albany, Rensselaer, and Washington counties in New York and Bennington county Vermont. Straight-line wind damage occurred across a wide area. Cloud to ground lightning rates over the region reached 15,000 strokes per hour, rates not observed before over this region. These storms resulted 68 injuries but no fatalities, tens of millions of dollars in damage to homes and businesses, and extensive forest damage.

I Think That 2 Day

#152 Postby Aslkahuna » Fri May 30, 2003 7:41 pm

Snowstorm in Yuma AZ should be a SANDStorm as Yuma has never recorded more than a Trace of snow since the town was founded and for Yuma to have been cold enough for snow in May would have meant record breaking cold temperatures in all of Arizona at the same time since Yuma is more likely to see temperatures of 100F+ than anything below 40 in May. May, however, is a windy month in Yuma and blowing dust and sand are common there then.
