I don't have the number for the US highest Heat Index value record, does anyone know what it is and if 131F beat it or not?

I went outside when the HI was about 125 or so. You step outside and you just feel any energy you had just get sucked out of you. It was something I've never felt before.

We experienced what our closest Weatherbug site was 134f heat index once. I had the same feeling as posted above. We were also closing blinds to help keep the heat out so our AC would at least cool the house down into the low 80's. I think that was during the 2000 heat wave here.

vbhoutex, what was the total amount of rain the Houston area received the past couple of days? I do know some rain and thunderstorms were finally able to reach SE TX. I am glad to see some moisture finally come into that region, although much more rain is needed over there for sure!

That depends on where you are in the Houston area. Eastern sides of the metro, from Galveston Bay East got drenched with up to 5 inches while my area in W Houston got 0.26" in the same time frame. Areas of the North and NE metro area got up to 1.5", which is not near enough to break our drought unfortunately.

Our high temperature today was 99. Tomorrow is looking at 101.

The water temperature off of New Jersey and Delaware is in the low 80's. I'm surprised that Bret doesn't want to hang out here for a little bit...

I remember the summer of 1977 in New York when the second week of July had 100+ degree temps. We had an air conditioner in family room window. I remember hanging outside with my friends and taking a dip in the pool in the backyard. It was also the time of the Great NYC brownout due to the excessive electric demands, and the Son of Sam. How the heck did we get by without air conditioning?

Since everyone is talking about heat, the highest temperature I have ever experienced (not
due to the weather), was when I was at a gym and they had a Sauna. I decided to step
in the sauna just to feel it for a few seconds. They kept that thing at 170*F, no kidding,
felt like a big fire in my face, you will pass out after about a minute. Of course, outside the temperature was 90 degrees cooler, about 80*F after a rain shower in Saint Petersburg.

I can't say I have ever experienced anything like that except maybe like in a sauna but I still had energy like most do. Sounds like something I should try sometime...I call it "Heat Chasing" :P . If your in an extremely hot car on a bright, hot, muggy, summer day...then the air temperature can be over 50ºC and the humidity would be soaring past that. I did go into one on the hottest day of the year in 2006 and just breathing the hot air is difficult and not long after 2 mins you can't bear it. I suppose the heat indices were similar to that, like breathing in sauna air?

That's sick! Literally!

Yesterday for southern Ontario was certainly one to remember for heat. There were many things happening that I have never seen before here. The heat came on quite early in the morning which is very uncommon and caused huge problems with people trying to get somewhere for work or other activities. The night time lows were very high plus the Humidex values didn't go under 40C in some places! One of the impressive feats was Windsor Ontario reaching the grand 50C Humidex...the first time I've seen it occur in Ontario. It's extremely rare and probably only happens once every 25 years if that. The Humidex record for Windsor is 52C I believe set sometime in the mid 20th century and was the highest in the country before July 2007. When I stepped outside it reminded me of Florida's weather :sun: .

The death toll now from The Grand North American Heatwave of 2011 currently stands at 22+. The statue of Liberty in NY had to be closed because it reached 43ºC inside, power lines in Chicago have reportedly started to melt which led to power outages to 7000, concrete in Toronto started to buckle (like in many other cities), A bunch of pipes started to burst in OK because of the heat, Weird heat fogs came off the lake near Chicago which forced closures to beaches, Rail lines began to warp, among other phenomena.

Here is yesterday's summary of the heatwave from the HPC:

And here is the warning that was sent out by Environment Canada yesterday to all of southern Ontario about the extreme heat:

Environment Canada wrote:**All of southern Ontario**
11:36 AM EDT Thursday 21 July 2011
Weather warning for
**All of southern Ontario continued**

Extreme temperatures and humidex values expected today.

The humid tropical air mass has arrived as expected. The strong July sun will quickly cause the mercury to soar well into the middle and upper thirties this afternoon. Combining the record setting temperatures with the high humidity in this sultry tropical air mass will result in oppressive humidex values in the low to mid forties across all of Southern Ontario by this afternoon.

There will be some local relief from the high humidex values immediately along the shorelines of the Great Lakes and large inland lakes.

Current indications suggest that a weak front will slip through tonight. However in the wake of the front it will continue to be hot on Friday with temperatures in the low to mid thirties but somewhat less humid. Well above normal temperature will continue into the weekend for most of Southern Ontario with temperatures reaching the low thirties again on Saturday. It will be the combination of the duration of the high heat along with warm overnight conditions which makes this heat event particularly significant.

During times of high heat and humidity, it is critical to stay properly hydrated by drinking Plenty of fluid like water or juice. Strenuous outdoor activities should be scheduled during the early morning or evening hours. Wear loose fitting, light weight clothing and spend as much time as possible in air conditioned places. Stay out of the sun and never leave elderly, children or pets unattended in a car.

Refer to your local public forecast for further details.

There is no link for that one. Just a note, for the time I have been following the weather I have never seen a warning for anywhere in Ontario for heat until now. This warning is for all of southern Ontario. If anyone remembers the last time Environment Canada gave out an explicit warning about the heat, fill us in.

#28 Postby Stephanie » Fri Jul 22, 2011 7:56 pm

I've seen 102 and 104 readings for Philadelphia today. Not sure which is the official reading. This morning at 5:30 it was in the upper 70's. By 10:00 am it was in the mid 90's. The windows were coated with moisture on the outside early this morning and it felt disgusting.

Part 2 tomorrow. Almost the same as today, maybe a degree or two less. This is horrible.

You may be observing that again today. Forecast for Philadelphia 103 degrees. Currently, 15 miles south of Philadelphia at 10:05 am, 92 degrees. It's almost exactly like yesterday.

Still sweating here in southern Ontario, yesterday and Friday showed that the heat wave was still ongoing and temperatures once again reached into the mid-30s and Humidex values over 40C for some areas south and along the 401 corridor. The 7-day forecast shows very hot conditions continuing in general with 1 or 2 days of just "warm" weather. By Friday the heatwave comes back to where it all started so this is basically a heatwave that is either a double dip one or one that never really went away.

Here is yesterday's summary of the heatwave from the HPC:

These are some of the highest Heat Indices I've ever seen for New England I believe. The death toll from the heatwave now stands at 24+ in the US and at least 10 in Canada from Montreal Quebec.
