SEVERE WX update 2-24-04

By the way Tom.. what do you think will happen severe weather wise around here..? Are we in for a rough night..? or is it again going to be a lot of hype and no action lol

I think the potential is there for some severe thunderstorms across central Florida in the next several hours, especially late tonight tomorrow night with the thread not diminishing to much until late Wednesday.

The same weather systems create this event now will have an effect on the region until sometime on Thursday, as I mentioned... As Jeremy said, CAPE (Convection Available Potential Energy) values remain high, which is one of the important parameters for severe weather.

I guess we'll have to keep watching while we have this lull in the action..

1 quick question. Is a higher Cape value meaning that the threat for severe weather is high? or does it mean that the threat for severe weather is low? lol.. Just curious

It's higher...the higher the number, the more prone to severe storms the area is...

Yep...in answer to your question re: the tornado threat, it's still there, mainly south of a line from say Tampa to Melbourne, but will diminish a bit through the evening...after about 2am, it will really diminish until things get cooking again tomorrow late morning...as for another watch, it's probably going to happen, but not before around 10pm, so while it's still possible, severe wx is not likely where the storms have gone through...

We have only had 1 storm today.We had a squall go through here about 2pm. Since then it's been light rain but the sun is shining again..

I had a feeling another watch may be brought out. Around 10pm makes the most sense since we're in a bit of a lull right now..

Guess now we'll just wait and see what late tonight and into tomorrow may bring

The severe thunderstorm threat has moved south of a Tampa to Melbourne line for the last couple to next couple of hours and those chances have already decreased in the last one to two hours.

The potential for strong to severe weather across all of central Florida is in the forecast for later tonight into tomorrow and even again during the day tomorrow before the activity moves out of the region some time on Thursday.

There was a pretty close lightlning strike and subsequent loud rumble of thunder here 10 to 15 minutes ago.
