Scud? Had to look that one up but now I got what you meant.

Only other time I'd heard the term was in reference to missiles.

Did you know that term before Skywarn class? :)

Just watched this puppy go real close to severe in my area around Westheimer and Gessner. Took off chasing wall cloud and possible funnel N and W of me, but was unable to get a confirmation on the funnel cloud as I didn't get close enough for a verification(good ole Houston traffic). I'd give odds that it was one though. Fortunately no hail out of this, but some torrential downpours and major CG with it and gusts to 35 mph or so.

The fun of it all is there is another round coming in from San Antonio just like this one. It may get the Galveston area too as it looks to be a littel farther south. To top it off the incoming front isn't really even a factor in this yet. That will come later tonight and tomorrow.

As of 12:50 PM CST, no one here seems worried about rain.

(Edit - The Strand Cam faces east so you can figure out wind direction by which way the flags are flying. Also, click refresh because the cams update every 6 seconds.)

And here's the view looking westward to see what's coming this way.

This cluster of storms looked ugly coming in and like SuziQ pointed out, the leading edge had a bunch of scud hanging off of it. It looked pretty mean coming in, that's for sure. Now it's just a moderate rain with a good amount of lightning and thunder. This is the first round with many more to come. Get your bathing suits out boys n gals........You are gonna need 'em!

BTW Duckie, that is a Flash Flood Watch so far. If we get more sets of storms like this one we may end up with some FFWarnings before it is all over.

A severe T-storm watch has been posted for areas West and NW of me. Looks like this line is SE TX might hold together and give us some rough weather tonight. Had a heavy downpour move through at around 930 but since then just partly cloudy and muggy...the atmosphere will be prime for this line to hold together and/or strengthen this evening.

Power was knocked out at Hobby airport by lightning strike. Most flights weren't affected since they were already grounded, but security and ticket processing was delayed.

Not too surprising considering how wicked the CG was in my area!! Both my office and my wifes office lost power for a short time during the storm. What a nightmare though for those wanting to get processed and boarded.

Yard Work Can be Done Tonight

#33 Postby KatDaddy » Tue Jun 22, 2004 4:26 pm

We have missed the rain and storms today as well as much of the previous events. I put off mowing the lawn and forecasted the storm complex stablizing the atmosphere and giving us a decent evening along the Upper Texas Coast. We did get one heavy shower but that was it.
Flash Flood Watch up with isolated 6" totals by tomorrow night.

Just saw a graphic by a local met that showed my area picking up 6"+ by Sunday. This will only increase our huge rainfall surplus of the year which is 15"! Can't imagine what that figure would be like if we have tropical trouble later this summer and fall...bottom line, it's been WET!

I think I'll set the alarm on my cell phone because it looks like some severe stuff is going to make it here overnight. The power (and regular alarm clock) might get knocked out for a while.

Too much rain for SE Tex

#37 Postby stormcloud » Tue Jun 22, 2004 9:34 pm

The continuing rain over Southeast Texas has been a growing concern for me in case of a tropical threat. With wet ground and full rivers/bayous, draining large amount of rains, courtesy of a tropical system, would be a big problem. If my memory is correct, prior to Alicia in '83 the area had been very wet. When the hurricane/tropical force winds moved into the area, many trees were literally torn up by their roots, as the wet ground just couldn't hold them down. As we approach August and September, I'm hoping that summer will finally start, and we go back to our 'isolated' thundershowers again. I'm getting a little tired of this rain.

You and me both!!!

BTW, how much do you see in the way of rain for SE TX with this week's system's? I've heard up to 8" and even the possibility of a low closing off down off of B'ville late in the week and riding up the coast.

Although I would rather it not rain every day, at least we are not having any extreme heat or drought like we've had in past years. It's nice not having to worry about watering anything in the yard  .
