Historic Flooding Expected For Delaware, Schuylkill

POSTED: 6:04 pm EDT June 27, 2006
UPDATED: 6:37 pm EDT June 27, 2006

The NWS now expects Easton, Pottstown and possibly Philadelphia to be hit with major flooding from the Schuylkill and Delaware rivers. Reading is also expected to see heavy flooding.

NBC 10 Chief Meteorologist Glenn "Hurricane" Schwartz says the flooding has the potential to put the Schuylkill River at its highest level in Philadelphia in the past century. In Philadelphia, the flood stage is 11 feet. It could rise to 15.5 feet by Wednesday afternoon into Thursday. Its highest recorded level is 17 feet.

Manayunk will be directly affected by this event.

A crest at that predicted level would top levels seen by Hurricane Agnes and Floyd in Philadelphia, says Schwartz.

The NWS now forecasts that Reading will see a flood crest of nearly 24 feet from the Schuylkill River on Wednesday evening, compared with its flood level of 13 feet. Flooding is already occurring there.

In Pottstown, the flood crest could hit 23 1/2 feet by Thursday morning, compared with its flood stage level of 13 feet.

In Philadelphia, the flood stage is 11 feet. It could rise to 16 feet by Wednesday afternoon into Thursday.

On the Delaware River, Easton could get hit hard. The NWS forecast a flood crest near 35 feet by late Wednesday, compared with a flood stage of 22 feet.

In New Hope and Lambertville, the flood crest is forecast at between 18 and 20 feet, compared with a flood stage of 13 feet.

In Trenton, the flood crest is forecast at between 25 and 27 feet, compared with a flood stage of 20 feet.

Since we're talking flood stage and river stage I have a question. Is riverstage an arbitrary number or is it measured from the river bed to the normal surface of the water? This is something that has always confused me...

PA river gauges, I noted there are a number of new gauges around the Philly area on some flood prone creeks. A study of some kind must be going on.

What a nightmare! I believe, as I posted in rainstorm's thread, that Yardley, New Hope Trenton, etc. was hit hard last year or perhaps the year before by flooding from the Delaware. You NEVER hear about major flooding by the Schuylkill. Dr. Greg Forbes on TWC called the situation "life threatening". Be VERY careful everyone!!

schuykill is already out of its banks at Reading and north of it...and the rain hasn't even begun to get heavy.........and with the southeast winds backing the Bay back up into the Delaware there might be some more concerns in the City itself.

The creek in my apt complex is out of its banks, I already moved my car . I'm going to have to check to see if rt 29 gets flooded out, I hve to take that to get to work and on my way home the Delaware was almost out of its banks there. It's very high, the last time I saw it that high was last year.

You all be careful, keeping all of us in prayer, we needed the rain, but not like this!

I heard a while back that there are levees on the Delaware, some off of route 130 and there is supposedly one near Penns landing and if they ever give...

I DON'T THINK we will be under a "Drought Watch" anymore after this!

terstorm and Mary - you just might be better off taking the day off tomorrow. You MAY be able to go to work, but might not be able to get back home. Actually, you may be forced to take the day off.

Actually, I heard that there are evacuations already taking place in PA.

with our luck and this bizarre weather stephanie, it may not rain another drop until next May. I'm debating on staying home tomorrow, but the worst will be Thursday for me.

as for levees I don't think there are any at Penns Landing but Penns Landing is built on landfill, the river's old bank was somewhere west of Delaware (oops sorry, Columbus) Ave.

there's levees up and down the Susquehanna north of here and they're in horrendous condition apparently.

Forecast for the Susquehanna River Valley, river crests LOWER then last night. 91L moved through faster then expected! Instead of a 25 foot crest at Harrisburg, we're now expecting about 20 feet. So now I don't have to evacuate. (But I was looking forward to the day off from work...grrr..).

Still looks bad in the Delaware basin.
