WEATHER SUMMARY FOR THE U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE SAN JUAN PR
530 AM AST WED JUL 26 2006

SKIES WERE VARIABLY CLOUDY ACROSS THE U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS THIS
MORNING...AND ALTHOUGH HEAVY SHOWERS PASSED BETWEEN SAINT THOMAS AND
SAINT CROIX...VERY LITTLE RAIN FELL ON THE ISLANDS THEMSELVES. WINDS
WERE EAST TO NORTHEAST AT 5 TO 15 MPH.

SHOWERS WILL GENERALLY DECREASE TODAY AHEAD OF THE COMING TROPICAL
WAVE. IT WILL BE BREEZY DURING THE DAY AND WINDS WILL CONTINUE
STRONGER THAN USUAL OVERNIGHT TONIGHT.

MODELS ARE CONTINUING TO PREDICT INCLEMENT WEATHER WITH THE COMING
TROPICAL WAVE. RAINSHOWERS WITH A FEW THUNDERSTORMS WILL BEGIN
SPREADING ACROSS THE AREA WEDNESDAY NIGHT...AND WINDS WILL BE A BIT
FRESHER THAN USUAL. SHOWERS WILL INCREASE ON THURSDAY AND WINDS WILL
BE BRISK...THEN MOISTURE WILL SPREAD OVER THE AREA AGAIN AND SHOWERS
WILL CONTINUE THROUGH THE NIGHT. WINDS ARE EXPECTED TO BE STRONGEST
IN THUNDERSTORMS OVERNIGHT ON THURSDAY...ESPECIALLY OVER THE LOCAL
WATERS.

MARINERS SHOULD EXPECT WINDS OF 21 KNOTS OR LESS AND SEAS OF 6 FEET
OR LESS ACROSS THE REGIONAL WATERS TODAY...BUT WINDS WILL INCREASE
TONIGHT AND TOMORROW AND CARRY STRONG GUSTS. WINDS AND SEAS WILL BE
HIGHER THAN FORECAST IN LOCAL AREAS WHERE CONVECTIVE CLUSTERS
GROW...AND MARINERS WILL FIND SQUALLY CONDITIONS THAT ARISE SUDDENLY
AND PRODUCE VERY ROUGH SEAS LATE TONIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY. SMALL CRAFT
SHOULD EXERCISE CAUTION ACROSS THE ATLANTIC AND CARIBBEAN WATERS
TODAY AND TONIGHT. SMALL CRAFT ADVISORIES ARE EXPECTED TO BE POSTED
TONIGHT IN THE OUTER ATLANTIC WATERS.

AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE SAN JUAN PR
325 PM AST WED JUL 26 2006

.DISCUSSION...THE MAIN FEATURE ABLE TO PRODUCE SOME WEATHER IS A
TROPICAL WAVE. QUICKSCAT DATA THIS MORNING AND SATELLITE DERIVED
WINDS IN THE 1050- 900 MB LAYER INDICATED WINDS SPEED OF 25-30 KT
ASSOCIATED TO THIS FEATURE AND THE ATLANTIC HIGH. THE WAVE IS
MOVING AT A SPEED OF AROUND 20 KNOTS THEN I AM INCLUDING GUSTS OF
UP TO 35 MPH OVER PART OF THE ATLANTIC AND CARIBBEAN WATERS
THURSDAY. MOISTURE BEHIND THE WAVE MAY PRODUCE ADDITIONAL SHOWERS
AND ISOLATED THUNDERSTORMS FRIDAY.

GFS MODEL GUIDANCE SUGGEST GOOD UPPER LEVEL DIVERGENCE WHICH
SHOULD RESULT IN GOOD THUNDERSTORM ACTIVITY OVERNIGHT AND
THURSDAY.

MODIFY GRIDS A BIT TO ADJUST THE TIMING OF THE WAVE WHOSE EFFECTS
WILL START EARLIER THAN ANTICIPATED.

&&

.SYNOPSIS...A TROPICAL WAVE NEAR 60 WEST THIS AFTERNOON WILL
CONTINUE MOVING TOWARD THE WEST APPROACHING THE LOCAL AREA AND IS
EXPECTED TO ENTER THE EASTERN CARIBBEAN AND AFFECT OUR LOCAL
COASTAL WATERS EARLY THURSDAY INTO FRIDAY. THIS WILL BRING AN
INCREASE IN WINDS AND SEAS AS WELL AS HAZARDOUS AND SQUALLY
WEATHER CONDITIONS ACROSS THE REGIONAL WATERS. THE ATLANTIC HIGH
PRESSURE WILL TAKE CONTROL OF THE LOCAL WEATHER FRIDAY.

&&

.MARINE...WIND GENERATED WAVES WILL INCREASE IN ASSOCIATION TO THE
WAVE PRODUCING HAZARDOUS MARINE CONDITIONS.

&&

.AVIATION...STRONG GUSTS ASSOCIATED TO HEAVY PASSING SHOWERS AND
ISOLATED THUNDERSTORMS MAY REACH OVER 30 MPH VALUES OVER THE LOCAL
AIRPORTS AND VICINITIES.

Here comes the rain and some strong winds too.

Hi Luis!

We finally had some rain today, a couple of brief but very heavy showers! Wind gusts to 24kt reported by one captain from a thunderstorm near our airport.

Looks like Martinique/Dominica going to have some heavy rains tonight.

Buoy 41100 had winds over 20kt from 7am to 3pm today, highest hourly report was 26kts, or 30mph.

Lightning getting really frequent, thunder louder. The lights have already dimmed a couple of times, I'm unplugging the computer! Looks like some good rain tonight.

GREAT lightning show going on and thunder as well...I came home from housesitting afraid I'd left my windows open...nope, I didn't, but I like it better here, hardly any light but the sky show. Looks like some big rain coming in soon. Good!

Good morning, neighbors! Wow, what a show overnight. If I'd had a water-proof camera and some nerve, I could have gotten pics of some incredible lightning - big fat bolts down to the water, and networks of them across the sky. Thunder that went on for 10-15seconds at a time. It was almost like daylight out there, the lightning so frequent. Radar shows since 1:22am parts of our islands had 2-3" rain, but it started raining much earlier than that. As expected the power went out shortly after the big boomers arrived. Mine came back on early this morning, but some areas are still off. One of the big potted palms on the balcony blew over last night, so a gust of at least 40mph to do that. Right now it's very hazy and grey cloudy skies.

bvigal,no major flooding occured with the wave passage as the bulk of the precipitation passed just to our north. Also the strong winds moved the showers that made it into PR move fast so no big accumulations occured.

Really not much rain here either, after a nice shower this morning...the coolness gave way to still humidity. We can't tell if it is haze, ash, dust or what that is hanging in the air. But the gardens DO love the rain water!!

AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE SAN JUAN PR
522 PM AST FRI JUL 28 2006

.DISCUSSION...AN ACTIVE TROPICAL WAVE LOCATED OVER THE LESSER
ANTILLES LATE THIS AFTERNOON...WILL CONTINUE MOVING QUICKLY WEST
NORTHWEST TOWARD THE LOCAL AREA EARLY TONIGHT...THEN PASS ACROSS
THE U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS AND PUERTO RICO LATE TONIGHT THROUGH EARLY
SATURDAY NIGHT. THIS WAVE WILL RESULT IN A SIGNIFICANT INCREASE
IN SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS AND WINDS ACROSS THE LOCAL ISLANDS.
WSR-88D ALREADY SHOWING BANDS OF SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS MOVING
QUICKLY WEST NORTHWEST AND APPROACHING ST CROIX AND EXPECT THIS
WEST NORTHWEST MOTION TO CONTINUE TONIGHT...ALLOWING CLOUDINESS...
SHOWERS AND STORMS TO GRADUALLY SPREAD ACROSS THE LOCAL ISLANDS.
THE WAVE WILL CONTINUE TO MOVE ACROSS THE LOCAL AREA THROUGH
SATURDAY...RESULTING IN A GOOD DEAL OF CLOUDINESS...SHOWERS AND
STORMS AND VERY GUSTY WINDS. EXPECT SOME LOCALLY HEAVY
RAINFALL...BUT QUICK CELL MOTION TONIGHT THROUGH AT LEAST THE
FIRST PART OF SATURDAY...SHOULD KEEP MOST FLOODING IN THE URBAN
AND SMALL STREAM ADVISORY. THE TROPICAL WAVE WILL MOVE AWAY FROM
THE LOCAL REGION LATE SATURDAY NIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY...WITH A
GENERALLY DRIER AND MORE STABLE AIR MASS EXPECTED FOR LATE SUNDAY
THROUGH TUESDAY. WE WILL BE WATCHING THE TROPICAL WAVE...APPROACHING
40 DEGREES WEST AT THIS TIME...CLOSELY OVER THE NEXT FEW DAYS. A
FIRST GUESS FROM THE GFS WOULD HAVE THIS WAVE NEAR THE LOCAL
ISLANDS DURING THE LATE WEDNESDAY/THURSDAY TIME FRAME.

&&

.MARINE...THE APPROACHING TROPICAL WAVE WILL RESULT IN A
SIGNIFICANT INCREASE IN SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS...WINDS AND SEAS
ACROSS THE REGIONAL WATERS BEGINNING TONIGHT AND CONTINUING
THROUGH LATE SATURDAY/SATURDAY NIGHT...MAKING FOR HAZARDOUS
MARINE CONDITIONS. A SMALL CRAFT ADVISORY IS NOW IN EFFECT FOR ALL
OF THE LOCAL ATLANTIC AND CARIBBEAN WATERS FOR TONIGHT.

Good morning all! We had NO rain yesterday or overnight, being just above the dividing line of the squalls from this tropical wave. Of all the Virgin Islands, St. Croix has had the bulk of the rain/wind.

Wind wind and more wind. A bit of rain starting now, but very slow drips more than real rain. It looks like pre-dawn light though...really dark.

It sure is building in now, lots of little yellow and red blobs materializing on the radar to our east. Will have some rain to go with the 5ft seas in the channel and 20+mph winds.

I'm starting to think our radar is whacked. It was down for repair, and now...green means clouds and yellow means rain. Or seems to. It's that brassy light now, rain on and off. I opened the cart, sold some hot sauce, closed the cart and decided I was giving up for the day. Of course now it looks like it won't rain again...grrrrrrrr! And the wind has gone flat as well. Ah weather!

Holy cow! Some serious rain all night, still going on now (but much much more calmly)...lightning, thunder, raging rain - thankfully it woke me up as the place I'm housesitting has windows that were WIDE open on the weather side and before the place was soaked I woke up and got them shut. Luckily I'd left the upstairs ones closed..
Incredible...I'm really curious how much rain we got (are getting)!
