That lucky person was me. I never gamble, but I enjoyed the 25 minutes of steel rod precip we were blessed with yesterday. Ran downstairs after it started to see my better half soaking we from running out to turn of the sprinklers.

Remarkable that such a little blob on the radar could hammer us that hard. Looking at the pool, I think we got a half inch. That won't make up for what we
missed so far in June, but it looks just a bit greener here this morning.

Latest from Jeff Lindner-possible small glimmer of hope?
Record Heat and Dryness

Sent: Mon 6/22/09 9:31 AM

Strong upper ridge centered over SE LA today will migrate westward this week resulting in temps. climbing into the lower 100’s and a continued lack of rainfall.

Potent upper high over the lower Mississippi Valley this morning will migrate westward and become centered over SC TX by Thursday. Increasing thickness and 700-850mb temps. will result in warming of the surface temps. by 2-3 degrees for afternoon highs this week. Record highs at IAH and CLL will likely be tied or broken Tuesday-Thursday. Will go with 98-99 today and then 99-101 Tuesday-Thursday with 101-104 in the CLL to Huntsville areas for highs. Overnight lows continue to inch upward and are closing in on 80 degrees. Afternoon heat index values of 100-104 will rise into the 104-108 range. Heat stresses will continue to build and an advisory may be needed as some locations are very close to meeting criteria already.

Besides the rogue showers yesterday afternoon in NW Harris between IAH and Tomball few folks saw any rainfall and IAH has not had measureable rainfall in 29 days. Strong subsidence will spread westward today limiting any (10%) chance to west of I-45 for a heat induces storm. After today will go with a zeroed out chance Tuesday-Friday with strong ridge overhead. High afternoon temperatures and lack of rain is starting to take its toll on area water systems and vegetation. Conroe has enacted mandatory water restrictions and The Woodlands and Pearland voluntary. Demand on some water systems this past weekend was so high that pressure fell to less than 20psi in portions of Fort Bend and W Harris Counties. Given dry grounds and near record highs this week, evaporation rates will increase and vegetation health will continue a downward slide.

There appears to be a glimmer of hope by the end of this week into the first week of July as the nasty upper ridge moves northward allowing SE TX to come under a more typical easterly flow aloft. “Ring of fire” convection on the edge of the ridge may approach the area from the NE and E as early as Friday evening with better chances Saturday and Sunday. TUTT low may also drag across the NW Gulf around the end of the week bringing deeper moisture into the area. Will not get too excited at rain chances just yet…as the area will need widespread soaking rains…and even during a typical summer those usually only come from tropical systems….however we will take what we can get. GFS maintains a wetter pattern through the 8th of July under a deep tropical flow that would support daily rounds of seabreeze convection.

afternoon e-mail from Jeff Lindner...

Getting a few more showers along the seabreeze than thought…may see 20% coverage this afternoon.

Also rapid organization of tropical system in Bay of Campeche today moving NW to NE Mexico. Systems bears some watch, more later if needed as we will see what the next 6-12 hours brings from the surface and satellite data.

Some towering clouds in the sky and radar is showing some small blips around the Lafayette area, come on rogue shower! Yeah, it's gotten this bad, currently 98 degrees. 100 is the forecast tomorrow which is pretty rare for this area. :onfire:

I didn't get a drop yesterday, but part of Beaumont did. I'm not sure where else. My nephew had a baseball game yesterday and it rained out... can you believe it?

This afternoon, I saw dark clouds to my east and I talked to someone on my cell who said it was red over the Orange area. I guess they were the lucky ones today. I got some rain on June 2nd and 3rd... nothing since.

We actually got some of Jeff's 20% at my house. Unfortunately it was not measurable, just enough to wet the pavement.

BTW, that was after a high of 102.9ºf here at the house and 104ºf at the nearest weatherbug site.

Had an everyday non-weather geek person say to me today-"last time I remember anything like this was 1980." For someone who is not a weather freak to make that kind of observation is somewhat freaky, imo, since not that many people think along that type of line unless they are weather freaks.

Morning e-mail from Jeff Lindner...

Once again yesterday a few showers developed with the afternoon heat...99 at IAH. While coverage was around 10%, one showers developed over NW Downtown and moved MW up US 290...so many saw rain in a small area.

4km WRF and NAM show once again today a chance for showers mainly W of I-45. Will go with 10% to cover the seabreeze moving inland. We have finally lost the howling S wind of late that is allowing a better defined seabreeze....helping to induce a few showers. The storm yesterday over NW Houston was likely purely heat island induced along the baybreeze front.

Upper ridge now centered over NE TX and drifting WSW...so 99 yesterday could easily be 100 today and will go with low 100's on Wednesday. Records will likely fall at IAH, CLL, and HOU the next few days as the ridge parks nearly on top of SE TX. Will see low 100's at most inland sites with the CLL to UTS (Huntsville) corridor likely in the 102-104 range. Will see 101-103 in the area from Columbus to Victoria and then 99-102 across the metro areas. Urban heat island effect will likely show 103-105 in the downtown areas...overnight lows will also remain near 80 in the urban heat cores. Afternoon heat index values creep toward 108 degrees which is our local heat advisory criteria....so far no ASOS site has hit that yet. Feel the most likely location for advisory to be met is down around Matagorda Bay where afternoon temps. hit 100+ and surface dewpoints will not mix out as much.

Gulf:

Surface trough extends from the southern Bay of Campeche toward KBRO this morning with active convection across the southwest Gulf of Mexico. Satellite and surface observations do not indicate any surface low pressure and all the spin noted in satellite images is based in the mid levels. Since yesterday afternoon convection has weakened and become less concentrated as the mass moves WNW to NW at around 10mph. The deeper moisture should be shunted well to our south into the areas of deep south Texas and maybe as far north as CRP, but that is it as the ridge holds strong over the rest of the state.

Hope for greater rain chances by the weekend seem less today as the ridge holds...maybe an isolated storm Friday into Saturday over our eastern counties. Still hope around July 4th as ridge shifts northward allowing a trough to set up along the TX coast...that is a very wet pattern in July if the rains do not stay offshore.

I went with my neighbor to Wal Mart yesterday and got him his first Air Conditioner. That's saying a lot for how hot it's been, seeing how as he's nearly 70!! I about melted getting it put in right. He would have just stuck it in the window, and had air leaks all around it. He looked so much better today. He wasn't looking to good the last few days.
I guess I did my good deed for the day, week, month, year? :)
