MESOSCALE DISCUSSION 0896
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0606 PM CDT SUN MAY 11 2008

AREAS AFFECTED...SERN SC...FAR SERN GA

CONCERNING...TORNADO WATCH 308...

VALID 112306Z - 120030Z

THE SEVERE WEATHER THREAT FOR TORNADO WATCH 308 CONTINUES.

THREAT FOR ADDITIONAL SVR THUNDERSTORM DEVELOPMENT WILL CONTINUE FOR
ANOTHER HR...BEFORE LOSS OF HEATING ENDS ANY ADDITIONAL SVR THREAT.
A LOCAL EXTENSION FOR UP TO 1 HR MAY BE POSSIBLE IF REDEVELOPMENT
OCCURS PRIOR TO WW 308 EXPIRATION TIME /00Z/.

LATEST CHS RADAR IMAGERY SHOWS A WELL DEFINED SEA-BREEZE/DRYLINE
BOUNDARY INTERSECTION OVER SRN COLLETON COUNTY IN FAR SERN SC SWWD
INTO JASPER COUNTY. THIS BOUNDARY INTERSECTION IS WHAT AIDED IN A
SUPERCELL TO DEVELOP /PRODUCING A TORNADO RECENTLY INVOF OF CHS/.
ALTHOUGH DAYTIME HEATING WAS WANING...SUFFICIENT CONVERGENCE ALONG
THIS BOUNDARY INTERSECTION WAS SUPPORTING MDT/TCU PER VIS SATELLITE
IMAGERY. SUFFICIENT CONVERGENCE MAY SUPPORT ANOTHER SVR TSTM TO FORM
FROM THE FAR SERN SC COASTAL COUNTIES SWD INTO THE COASTAL COUNTIES
OF FAR SERN GA IN THE NEXT HR. GIVEN THE STRENGTH OF LOW LEVEL SHEAR
EAST OF THE SEA-BREEZE FRONT /0-1 KM SHEAR OF 36 KTS PER THE
CHARLESTON VWP/ ANOTHER TORNADO WOULD BE POSSIBLE WITH ANY SUPERCELL
WHICH COULD FORM OVER THIS AREA.

I got a report in of what appeared to be a non-rotating wall cloud over Cherry Point. Another TOR Warned cell inbound, this one is lower and will have a better shot at us.

Damn this is insane. More storms off to our Southwest, not affecting us currently, though. This is so crazy that the NWS has shut off the regular NOAA Wx Radio programing, and are live. You can hear the individuals in the background working.

I was looking for information on this storm and am getting conflicting reports of the state we're in now. Is Craven County still under a Tornado Warning or are we back down to a watch? The NOAA site shows a Tornado Warning in Carteret currently, will that be moving this way?

Brunota, I wanted to ask you - if a tornado touches down in Havelock will a siren go off? How do we know to take cover?

We have no sirens here. All the info I get is from radar and NWS Wx Radio. The time to really take cover is when you are in the warning, should take a portable NOAA Wx Radio or a regular radio for further reports on the status.

The tornado warned cells that were moving through Havelock are now out of the area. The other warning was for extreme SE Craven (the cell that moved through Newport). I think right now they are just trying to play catch up from having to take shelter. However, I'd keep an eye on those cells off to our SW in Onslow and Pender, just encase.

There are no current streams for MHX's radio broadcast that I know of, and I do not have the equipment needed to stream it myself.

I thought so - but fun stuff, listening to the guy on the fax or so.

Better so - don´t need to strech the media overkill

Yeah. I got to talk to one of them on the phone. I'll send my friend up there an e-mail, asking which one it was. I also got a ton of photos uploaded onto my computer, I'll try to get some on here.

Brunota, any updating you can give me I'd appreciate...I'm refreshing this page every 5 minutes. I'm trying to keep up with the radars and alerts but all I can think about is - it's dark. I have 11 animals. If there's one coming I'm SOL but I'd still like to know :) Looks like we're pretty much in the free and clear except for that one down around Onslow co right now right?
Any thoughts on where that could go?

Well, right now it looks like those cells will (thankfully) push off the coast. The thing I'm interested in is the development upstream in the Raleigh CWA. Check out their radar. SPC is (or at least was) talking about extending or replacing the TOR Watch locally across Southern NC, as the threat seems it'll be present for the next 3 or 4 hours.

I had a short conversation with Gary England from newsOK, when Hamburg was struck by a tornado. He was very friendly but only answered shortly. I think he recieves tons of mail each day.

Does anyone know if he´s still in service ?

I've met several of the staff at NWS Newport and have also e-mailed several others. I've been there for a general tour, and also after my 10th grade year (two years ago this July) went there for Job Shadowing. Got my Skywarn training then, also. Cannot believe it has been almost two years (which means I need to be recertified shortly, too).

As for anyone overseas, I would not know of anyone.
