TRINIDAD UPDATE: Sun March 21, 2010
94F 34.2C Sunday!!

Continuous dry spell ends with a mere 0.1mm recorded at Piarco Airport on Sunday
45 day dry spell has been the longest ever
Feb 4-Mar 20 2010..no measurable rain this period.
DAY # 27 of the heatwave
Feb 23-Mar 21** and counting 27 days at or over 33.7C 93F

As a side note:
Driest March on record at Piarco: March 1966 1.3mm
Driest March on record in W. Trinidad: March 1992 4.0mm

Feb 4 -March 21 **and counting ... just 0.1mm of rain at Piarco International Airport

Piarco Airport has never gone more than 30 days consecutively without rainfall, prior to 2010.

Hot, hazy conditions persisted across Trinidad on Sunday, with temperatures at Piarco Airport topping out at 34.2C 94F. There were very brisk showers/sprinkles crossing the island from time to time, but were very short-lived and very isolated. A large bush fire was burning at early afternoon within 800 meters of the airport runway, creating thick smoke and reduced visibility.

During next week, a series of weak disturbances could bring a few showers to the island chain, possibly by Tuesday or Wednesday. These showers are not foreseen to ease the immediate drought situation across the islands.

Since Feb 23, the temperature has reached or exceeded 33.7C 93F every day ( a string of 27 days consecutively) and most of those days, reached 94F and 95F

:uarrow: That's great :)

Today has been a very warm day in San Salvador, but thankfully a cold front will bring some relief tomorrow. The northerly winds may start tonight and the decrease in temperatures will occur tomorrow, unfortunately this could be the last "cold surge" that will affect the area as the spring has begun and the long range models are not predicting other significant event.

The northerly winds have arrived to San Salvador, I think this will be a moderate to strong event and possibly the end of the 2009-2010 cool season.

AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE SAN JUAN PR
352 AM AST MON MAR 22 2010

.SYNOPSIS...ISOLATED...QUICK PASSING SHOWERS...WILL BE POSSIBLE
ACROSS SECTIONS OF PUERTO RICO AND THE U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS THE
NEXT FEW DAYS AS PATCHES OF LOW LEVEL MOISTURE STREAM ACROSS THE
LOCAL REGION AND DIURNALLY DRIVEN SHOWERS DEVELOP OVER THE WESTERN
SECTIONS OF PUERTO RICO EACH AFTERNOON. WINDS WILL BE GENERALLY
EASTERLY AND BREEZY AT TIMES...AS ONE AREA OF HIGH PRESSURE ENTERS
THE CENTRAL ATLANTIC AND A SECOND AREA OF HIGH PRESSURE EVENTUALLY
BUILDS ACROSS THE WESTERN ATLANTIC LATE IN THE WEEK.

&&

.DISCUSSION...A FEW SHOWERS HAVE BEEN AFFECTING SECTIONS OF
SOUTHEASTERN PUERTO RICO THIS MORNING AS AN INCREASE IN LOW LEVEL
MOISTURE ADVERTISED BY THE GFS IS NOW ENTERING THE EASTERN
CARIBBEAN. EXPECT THIS PATCHY MOISTURE TO BRING MAINLY ISOLATED
SHOWERS ACROSS THE LOCAL ISLANDS FOR THE NEXT FEW DAYS...ALSO
HELPING TO ENHANCE DIURNALLY DRIVEN SHOWER DEVELOPMENT OVER
WESTERN SECTIONS OF PUERTO RICO THE NEXT FEW AFTERNOONS...ASSUMING
INCREASED WIND FLOW DOESNT PREVENT LLVL CONVERGENCE FROM
DEVELOPING THERE. STILL TOO STABLE TO EXPECT ANY THUNDERSTORM
ACTIVITY OUT WEST...BUT WILL LIKELY SEE ISOLATED TO SCATTERED
SHOWERS AS WE HAVE SEEN THE PREVIOUS TWO DAYS.

WHILE WIDESPREAD...SIGNIFICANT SHOWER ACTIVITY IS NOT EXPECTED
THROUGH THE UPCOMING WEEK...AN INCREASE IN TRADE WINDS AND MORE
EASTERLY WIND FLOW SHOULD BRING MORE SEASONABLE TEMPERATURES AND
SLIGHTLY MORE SHOWER ACTIVITY ACROSS THE VI AND EASTERN SECTIONS
OF PUERTO RICO...ESPECIALLY DURING THE EVENING AND OVERNIGHT HOURS.

&&

.AVIATION...EXPECT PREVAILING VFR CONDITIONS TO CONTINUE ACROSS THE
LOCAL ISLANDS AND AT ALL LOCAL TAF SITES FOR AT LEAST THE NEXT 24
HOURS. HOWEVER...VERY BRIEF MVFR CONDITIONS ARE POSSIBLE OVER PARTS
OF INTERIOR AND WEST PUERTO RICO BETWEEN 22/18Z AND 22/23Z IN
PASSING SHRA.

&&

.PRELIMINARY POINT TEMPS/POPS...

Spotty and isolated showers have been moving through portions of the Windward Islands in the past 12-24 hours especially, some totals from overnight:-

Grantley Adams, B'dos 3.2mm
Rockley, S. Barbados 0.3mm
Point Salines, Grenada 2mm
Hewanorra St Lucia 1.7mm
Vigi, St Lucia 1.6mm

so light, but a little is better than none at all. 8-)

Northerly winds are affecting Central America, the temperatures have not decreased and actually the lows this morning have been a little higher than yesterday minimums but the winds feel really nice. I think that tonight will be cooler than last night. Some observations of max wind gusts in El Salvador:

Ishuatan 35 km/h (22 mph)
San Salvador 33 km/h (21 mph)
San Miguel 26 km/h (16 mph)

Those wind gusts were measured about an hour ago, at this time they're stronger but the data is still not available, let's see if the maximum temperatures are not as high as yesterday.

I already posted this graphic in another thread, but I wanted to repost it in this thread as is for the members who live in the Caribbean islands. We have to be prepared because it looks like it will be an active season for this area of the basin.
