The light rain started late last night... it's been a lot heavier this morning. I don't see an end at this point as radar shows the lighter rain intensifying as it approaches the area. And it's cold out... brrrr.

According to NWS, tomorrow could bring severe weather.

AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE LAKE CHARLES LA
954 AM CST SAT NOV 24 2007

.UPDATE...HAVE UPDATED TO ADD THE MENTION OF HEAVY RAINFALL ALONG
AND SOUTH OF I-10 TODAY WITH THUNDERSTORMS. DD6 RAINFALL SITES
INDICATED 1 HOUR RAINFALL RATES 2 INCHES IN WESTERN JEFFERSON
COUNTY. OTHERWISE...RAIN EXPECTED TO OVERSPREAD THE FORECAST AREA
THROUGH THE DAY. AGAIN SOME HEAVY AT TIMES IN THE THUNDERSTORMS.
STILL LOOKING LIKE A GOOD POSSIBILITY OF SEVERE WEATHER TOMORROW
WITH SURFACE LOW LIFTING OUT OF THE GULF AND STRONG UPPER LEVEL
SYSTEM APPROACHING FROM THE WEST. WIND PROFILES SHOWING POTENTIAL
FOR ROTATING THUNDERSTORMS AND POSSIBLY TORNADOES. WILL EVALUATE
THIS FURTHER FOR AFTERNOON PACKAGE.

I heard loud claps of thunder early this morning. It woke me up. :grr: It rained a lot and it will rain all day today and likely tomorrow. Doppler Radar estimates up to 6 inches fell.

What a week! We spent Thanksgiving week on the Colorado River near Matagorda. Had a fabulous house and lighted fishing dock right on the river. Fishing was fabulous last Sunday evening under the lights, and then the river rose. Remember all that rain we got last Saturday night? Apparently Wharton got 6-8 inches, and the little dam near Bay City just opened the flood gates. Within a few hours, the water rose a good 15 feet, and the flow rate went from about 600 cfs to nearly 20,000 cfs. All Monday afternoon more and more debris came downstream including whole trees - some over 50 feet tall, and a few dead cattle and deer. By 10:00 Monday evening, the river was completely choked with debris from bank to bank, and I now know the meaning of the term "raging torrent."

In spite of all that, we did OK with the fishing - red fish, channel cats, and the ubiquitous hardheads that we fin-clipped and sent back as bait. Last night I hooked into a 3+ foot alligator gar. Dam I had some fun with that fish! :cheesy:

The rain didn't hit until about 8:00 down near Matagorda, but when it got there, it came with a big bang. We pulled out of town shortly before 9:00 and saw some really impressive cloud-to-ground lighting - the kind that looks a mile wide and keeps going so long it about burns your retinas to watch it. It wasn't even all that cold this morning down on the coast, but 20 miles inland, we really began to notice the drop. By the time we got back to Houston, Fall was over and it was Winter in the space of 90 minutes. GAK!

I'm so glad to be back home and holed up with the fireplace going. Now that I've got all the comforts of home and I'm ready to play couch potato, no doubt the next round of weather will go completely around the Bear Creek Dome.

Hope y'all had a great Thanksgiving!

72°??? Are you kidding me? My sister said to tell you that you're not supposed to hang your thermometer from the fireplace.

It's 44° here.

Our temperatures are usually similar, unless a cold front has just gone through, which hasn't happened.

The reason they warmed is that a low pressure area helped bring a warm front up through Louisiana while also helping reinforce the cold here in Texas. You can kind of see it here on this image: http://www.hpc.ncep.noaa.gov/sfc/satsfc.gif

Definitely a crazy situation!

Here is a look at nationwide temperatures...

Yeah, EWG. I went and looked at a map after she gave her temp earlier. Our temps are normally so close though, so I thought she might have been smoking something funny today. Image

Yep that was a great example of a warm front today. We normally see this occur a few times each fall/winter and it can definately catch you off guard. Now that the low has moved east of us the associated cold front has moved through and it's back down to 49 degrees. Received about 2.5" since yesterday but some locations picked up 4-5"+.

Brr. It's a chilly morning out there. I had a temperature near 36˚ when I first got up around 5:30, but now that temperature has risen to 38.1˚ due to a little bit of fog and a few clouds.

Though the bulk of this upcoming arctic outbreak now looks to miss us, we can still expect a decent cool down next week. The 18z GFS is showing highs in the 50s to low 60s and lows in the 30s behind the front for our area, and by next Tuesday morning some outlying areas of Houston (such as Conroe, Tomball, etc) could even be flirting with the 32˚ mark.

Hey EWG I know you want Winter but would enjoy 75F year round. WXman57 and I feel the same when it comes to the cold...we hate it! One of the best days I have experienced was the 109F in Houston back in September of 2000. It was 110F under my deck that day. A true blast furnance heat. College Station hit 112F. OF course that was extreme.

http://www.srh.noaa.gov/hgx/stormsignals/vol56.htm#Heat

On the flip side if it gets cold......which is anything under 58F, it better snow or I am done with it. I love the heat but I want snow as much if not more than you EWG for SE TX. Its magical for the South. I really hope to see it this year but I will hold out until the last to get excited. Very many times of dissapointments in the past. The worst was the 1985 event when San Antonio picked up 13". The night before we had snow in the forecast.......3-6" for the Houston area! It never materalized.

I could not even imagine the Valentines 1895 snow storm in modern day. 20"of snow for Houston and 15" on the Island

From the Houston-Galveston NWS office:

The worst snowstorm to ever affect the upper Texas coastal plain occurred February 12-15, 1895. Ten to as much as twenty inches of snow fell from central Brazoria county to northern Orange county. Houston reported 20 inches of snow on February 14-15th while Galveston reported 15 inches.

Anyone else notice the back and forth game going on between the afternoon and morning shifts at the NWS? For the last two days the afternoon shift has been calling for lows on Tuesday morning in the mid to upper 30s, but then the morning shift keeps raising that forecast to lower 40s. It is obvious that the afternoon shift is buying into the operational GFS more and the morning shift is buying into the GFS MOS. Which one will end up being right? Time will tell..
