LOL!!! Typical of many of our locals I fear. My wife gets tired of me correcting them and I am talking about the reporters and some of the so called local mets that don't look beyond the end of their noses. I heard Tim Heller say that we only had a rain threat this evening without any threat of Severe, just before all hell started breaking lose in some areas. Him of all people surprised me with that one.

Glad everyone over there is ok. It looks like it is starting to fall apart, so likely a huge bust over here. I know we'll likely get some rain and maybe a thunderstorm, but I don't think we needed 70% chance last night, 100% chance today, 100% tonight, and 100% tomorrow. We had some hard rain briefly this morning and nothing since. I don't need it, just sayin'.

I have to say I'm disappointed to hear that about Tim Heller. He's usually pretty decent. But then, lack of trust in OCMs is why I come here. :D

And we now return you to our regularly scheduled Swine Flu panic coverage...

Been raining here in Orange County off and on since midnight.
My friend is the Director for the Orange County Red Cross and she said they have opened a shelter in Angelina County for flood victims up there. Deep East Texas is getting hit hard. I've been looking at updates on KTRE.com . According to their website, there are quite a few major highways and roads that are impassable because of high water.

Hi KD! Yes, we managed to get through it with dry feet. Had some water running thru the garage from back to front, but it's detached from the house so no big deal. <heaves huge sigh of relief> It took a few hours for the water to recede from the street as expected. Our neighbor was stuck on highway 6 until after midnight unable to get back in.

The problems with drainage in the Bear Creek subdivision are well-documented thanks to an engineering study hired by our local water district (HCUD #6). Part of the problem is in the actual storm sewers - old techology, pipes that run backward, outfall pipes that were never connected.

The worst offender are the outfall pipes in Langham Creek at Addicks-Satsuma. The creek has silted up heavily over the years leaving our outfall pipe under water in all but the worst of drought conditions. When we get a heavy downpour, the creek actually backwashes into the subdivision.

Another contributing factor is that shortly after the creek flows past Addicks-Satsuma, it just peters out into a kind of swampy area on federal property - the northern reaches of Addicks Reservoir. The elevation of the land in the reservoir is the same as the elevation in our part of the subdivision - about 206 feet above sea level. The swamp area needs to have a proper channel dredged out and the excessive undergrowth removed. Unfortunately, there are indian mounds (not burial mounds) on that property, so it would take an act of Congress to get any work done there.

The water slowly drains south to Clay Road outside Bear Creek Park. The City of Houston and Metro raised the road a few years ago effectively forming a dam for water trying to get into the deepest part of Addicks Reservoir. Although Clay was raised, it still floods regularly because not enough draining pipes were run under the road. Even Flood Control can't seem to find the study they say had to be done to fund that job.

This past August, Flood Control hired surveyors to check Langham Creek to see if it needs desilting and desnagging. They keep putting off the date they can present us with conclusions to that study. If it shows the need for work, we then have to fight Commissioner's Court to get it funded as a Capital Improvement Project.

Meantime, we keep right on flooding. Your government at work! (Aren't you glad you asked?!)

Final report from Spring Branch area. 3.42" of rain yesterday. It kept raining on and off almost all night, but fortunately no more training torrential downpours.

Fine here. It rained off and on throughout the night, but no biggie... pretty much a non-event. And it looks like all of today's rains are gone as well. Oh well. We really don't need the rain so I guess it's good, but the thunderstorm lover in me thought I'd at least get a good thunderstorm out of all the hype. My mistake.

No flooding over here... all streets and underpasses are fine. We didn't get all that much rain, so glad there was no problems.

Some people got quite a bit, though, and I hope all is well this morning.

Edit: I'd tell you how much rain I got, but when I went to check it, my rain gauge had broke. I can't imagine the winds from yesterday could have done it and I just bought it in late May... it shouldn't have been worn out. The holder that I had mounted broke and of course, the rain container fell. Stinks, but I guess I needed a better one anyway.

I don't know how accurate NWS storm totals are (I know it doesn't always match up to on the ground reports), but they show Vidor in the 2" range. I'm assuming the problems are from water flowing from the north as well, where the Lakes area got quite a bit of rain, and already saturated grounds. Vidor is between Beaumont and Orange.

Rising water prompts early release of Vidor ISD students

October 30, 2009 8:42 AM
Scott Lawrence

Rising water near several schools in Vidor has prompted the district to call for the early release of students, according to information KFDM News has received from Dr. Joe Burns, Vidor ISD Superintendent.

Elementary school students will be released at 11 a.m. and secondary students at noon.

The district has cancelled the book walk at Oak Forest Elementary and the carnival at Vidor Elementary.

There are no reports of flooding but Dr. Burns says many neighborhoods in Vidor are in low-lying areas and there is a lot of standing water in drainage ditches.

Stay with KFDM News for more on the story.
