Wind slammed into the house around 5:00 and woke me up out of a sound sleep. We have 6-8 foot wind chimes hanging in the tree outside and they're really putting out some noise. Methinks I'll get Dave to haul 'em down for the rest of the day. We've seen this movie before when the wind blows them down and the job of restringing is not a fun one. Feels like battening down before a tropical system. :lol:

There is definitely some suspended dust in the air that was blown in from West Texas.

Just great ... I don't know about your neck of the woods, but everyone in our area has been battling respiratory crud for a few weeks. Inhaled dust ought to push a few of us over the edge! :roll:

wow! The winds are blowin' pretty good right now. I was just out on the roads and huge pieces of debris are blocking traffic every now and then (inlcuding boxes, branches, and even a few metal signs/racks). I also lost power for a good 3-4 hrs. this morning which was not fun.

BTW, as I speak I can see more debris rolling down the roads outside...including plastic pumpkins (lol), trash, and twigs.

Latest wind reports (9am):

Hooks airport = NW 31 G 43 MPH

IAH = NW 22 G 32 MPH

Galveston = NW 29 G 37 MPH

yeah, the sun looks very "wintery" today because of all the dust. Almost looks like how I would picture the sun up in the arctic areas.

that's what's going on in Dallas. Currently they are in the 40s with high winds, thick clouds and some light rain.

Those clouds will somewhat work in here this afternoon before clearing overnight.

I was on the phone a few minutes ago and saw the pool umbrella go sailing across the yard. (Yeah, the same one I asked Dave to take down this morning. :roll: ) Went out to get it and had to fish the metal table out of the pool, which is FULL of debris. Our neighbors behind us have a huge Mexican fan palm (useless things) and every last one of the dead fronds has come off and are now knee-deep in my yard. The green ones are now starting to go as well. You know how heavy those things are?! We've got a tremendous clean-up job facing us when this wind stops. Tons of tree debris and some people have told me their power keeps cutting out. <knocks wood> I'm amazed mine has been on steady so far today.

Dave is driving up to Dallas on business this afternoon, where he was supposed to pick up a co-worker coming in from Huntsville, Alabama. He's not gonna make it - the co-worker reports that the airport officials are saying all flights to DFW are halted until further notice because of the wind, and the airlines are actually offering refunds instead of rescheduling.

Dave is in the middle of the worst asthma attack I've ever seen in all the 21 years I've known him. He avoids that breathing machine like the plague, but he's had to hit it every 3-4 hours since this wind kicked up, and has to do the steroid pack and every other thing the docs can throw at him. I've got very mild asthma and even I'm getting twitchy in the airways with this stuff. Get 'er gone!

Wow Jen, hope he feels better. After reading your post I'm almost afraid to go home. We have relatives coming in tomorrow - they are seeing our house for the first time - and tonight was supposed to be just some quick tidying-up (vacuming, etc.). I'm afraid of what's waiting for me in our back yard and pool - and we have two Mexican fan palms (I like them though) - but I keep them trimmed.

My main concern now is the Tiki bar. It has a thatched palm roof and I just had it replaced earlier this year. It's supposed to be good up to "gale force" winds but I'm afraid the thing took a beating today. We'll see. The only saving grace may be that my back yard is on the south side of the house and we have one heck of a roof pitch.

The power has flickered here are work a few times today. Thank God for Laptops with battery backup :-)
