Re: RECORD HIGHS MARCH 2012

I heard 36+ records were broken in Ontario alone yesterday. That is the highest I've ever heard of for any temperature event year 'round. There are some special weather statements by EC that show dense fog overnight for most areas of southern Ontario:

There are more for the central part of Ontario but I got this from a tweet and then went on EC's website to find it but instead found the "Special Weather Statements" section that is in the same format as the warnings. When I checked Ontario I found something I never even knew existed (at treasure trove of statements from EC like from the NWS!). Here are some from today:

This is a spectacular list as you can see. Notice the vast number of records are breaking just 2 year old records but by a lot. I don't know if that page is just for the last 24 hours of SWS's or not. tropicana, do you know about these and get some of your info from it? I'm seeing a bunch that don't appear on your list that are straight from EC. If you didn't know about this then wow what a find!

I added more tweets on Page 3 and some of them are older ones that are posted at the top of each "category". One that stuck out was the quote from EC's senior climatologist David Philips about how winter was truly cancelled this time (I find that to be very strong wording from someone like him but I 100% agree). I actually find it pretty hilarious as well and can just imagine the thoughts going through his head. It would be awesome to have a conversation with him on it.

#62 Postby Cyclenall » Tue Mar 20, 2012 1:34 pm

Well temperatures are going crazy high today yet again and so far records are being annihilated and that process started at noon today. So far places like Owen Sound and Windsor are already at 25ºC as of 1:00 pm which is extremely impressive. Hopefully the skies remain clear and the wind will be calm so that the temp. rises significantly. It's also 30ºC in Chicago I think (don't know if it was current or forecasted).

Waterloo ON reported today that they had the warmest winter ever with records going back 100 years.

Here is another first for this epic event:

Hard to be sure with EC not reporting temps for Ottawa yesterday and part of today but i would say we beat the record by 11 am and ended up at 25 later today. Personally i think tomorrow will be the hottest one for eastern Ontario and would not be suprised in the least to see the all time march record 26.4 fall on Wednesday. Just as a note Ottawa has not seen a 20 degree day in march since 2006.

3th straight 20C+ day in Montreal... this is obviously a record for March and the last time we had such streak in April was in 2008 (with 8 straight).

I just have no words to describe this heat wave...

7 consecutive days of 20C+ in Windsor: obviously a record for March... the last time they had such long streak of 20C+ days in April was in 1990, from the 23th to the 30th!!!

Last freeze in Windsor was March 10th!!!

Windsor also had the earliest 30C humidex ever recorded in Canada today

Montreal is also at 3 consecutive 20C+ days...

Here are the Special Weather Statements from EC today on the insane event (39 records broken today in Ontario alone!):

YESTERDAY WAS THE FIRST DAY OF SPRING. BUT IT FELT LIKE THE FIRST

OF AN HISTORIC WARM SPELL ACROSS ONTARIO WITH RECORD TEMPERATURES
TUMBLING BY THE DOZEN EVERY DAY. ALMOST 160 DAILY HIGH TEMPERATURE
RECORDS HAVE BEEN REWRITTEN OVER THE PAST WEEK ACROSS THE PROVINCE.
SOME RECORDS HAVE BEEN SHATTERED BY AS MUCH AS 14 DEGREES.

NORMALLY WE ARE STILL FEELING THE CHILL OF WINTER'S FINAL BREATH.
BUT INSTEAD, WORDS SUCH AS HUMIDEX, DAFFODILS AND PATIO WEATHER

FOR INSTANCE,
GERALDTON REPORTED 31 CENTIMETRES OF SNOW ON THE GROUND ON MARCH

IT APPEARS THAT THIS MARCH WILL LIKELY BE THE WARMEST MARCH ON

THIS WARM SPELL WILL LAST INTO WEDNESDAY ACROSS NORTHEASTERN ONTARIO

Today is the first day of spring. But it feels like the first day
Of summer. We are in the midst of an historic warm spell across
Ontario with record temperatures tumbling by the dozen every day.
Almost 160 daily high temperature records have been rewritten over
the past week across the province. Some records have been shattered
by as much as 14 degrees.

Normally we are still feeling the chill of winter's final breath.
But instead, words such as humidex, daffodils and patio weather
Are on everybody's lips. Even across Northern Ontario the snow
Pack has been melting at inconceivable rates. For instance,
Geraldton reported 31 centimetres of snow on the ground on March
18th. Two days later it had virtually all melted.

It appears that this March will likely be the warmest March on
Record for some places. In Toronto (Pearson airport), the previous
record warm March was 1946 with an average temperature of 5.2

normally the average is -0.4 degrees for Pearson. Given the

with the warmest departure from normal of any month for Toronto,
including downtown where records began in 1840!
The hottest March
Day ever recorded at Pearson was 25.6 set back in 1946 on March
28th. This may very well be broken on Thursday of this week.

This warm spell is also remarkable for its duration. It is more
reminiscent of a persistent summer heatwave.
The warm spell is
projected to last through Thursday after which a cold front will
introduce somewhat cooler air (but still above normal) on Friday.

Below are record maximum temperature records set on Tuesday
20-mar-2012. Please refer to the table below for more details.

I added the smilie in there. One of the most interesting items in that is the record for Parry Sound ON which broke the previous record by almost 20ºC (for the new weather station). Along with that 30ºC in northern Michigan yesterday, these inconceivable records have now surpassed Dennis and Emily occurring in July in the Atlantic basin. I know I'm comparing apples to oranges here but still. If somewhere in Ontario reaches 30ºC it will be just as amazing as Hurricane Katrina was.

combellack wrote:Hard to be sure with EC not reporting temps for Ottawa yesterday and part of today but i would say we beat the record by 11 am and ended up at 25 later today. Personally i think tomorrow will be the hottest one for eastern Ontario and would not be suprised in the least to see the all time march record 26.4 fall on Wednesday. Just as a note Ottawa has not seen a 20 degree day in march since 2006.

In my first post on this page Ottawa was on there with the record broken.

tropicana wrote:Moosonee ON 23.4C 74F (norm high for Mar 20 is -4C 25F, nearly 50 degrees Farenheit above average)

27.4ºC above average...another insane one to add to the list that is now "groaning" . Most amount of "all time March records" I've seen in Ontario/Canada. A wonder Collingwood ON didn't break it; should check that. The amount of meta-data that could be derived is impressive. I'm exhausted following this.

tropicana wrote:thanks nicko, oh how the weather has gone complete bonkers! grass has turned ultra green in niagara falls in just the matter of the last few days, most trees still not budding though

Same here, the trees however are budding and down south flowers are becoming full bloom. I just have to ask, did you read what I posted at the start of this page? It might save you some time :) .

Owen Sound ON looks to have broke a record by reaching 25ºC early in the afternoon before falling quickly later on. The almanac shows that the record was 23.9ºC set back in 1903 so a 109 year old record gone. Wiarton ON might be the station used for that area but its close enough. The Collingwood ON one also destroyed a 1903 record. After checking Collingwood ON I'm pretty certain it broke an all time March record as well but unofficially. As for Parry Sound ON, another weather station that has 100 years of data that is no longer in use has the record at 20.6 °C in 1903 so that means its not really as amazing as it appears ((4.9ºC 2005) is from a new station).

Nicko999 wrote:I just have no words to describe this heat wave...

Well that makes two of us. I've run out of adjectives to convey it like during the 2005 Atlantic Hurricane Season.

I would laugh if somewhere way up north like in Northern Michigan were to hit 90 today. But it just might happen.

So far the warmest I have found is Traverse City at 87, although it is probably close to 90 in some areas not sampled.

Today temps. reached high levels very early like on March 8, 2000. Most records were broken even before noon. Humidity went up even higher today than yesterday.

Here is a very interesting and detailed write-up about the historic March Heat-Wave from Dr.Jeff Masters:

Link: http://www.wunderground.com/blog/JeffMa ... rynum=2057

From this, there are lake records being shattered like I thought and math on the statistics of this event and using deviations how often it might occur (talk of once every 43 years and 4779 years and maybe beyond...)

Another ripple effect of this that is making national news is the pollen levels and how they are at record highs as well...bigtime. Tons of people with allergies are having a brutal experience and doctors say they've never seen so many patients this early with bad symptoms. Even people who don't normally experience any seasonal allergies say they have it  . For me, mine are actually non-existent right now and I love it. I don't know why but I hope its not because it hasn't reached this far north yet or I could be in for some big trouble!!

I wonder if anyone has broken an APRIL record so far, so that March now has a higher extreme than April?

A few crazy numbers (for Canada)...

-Montreal, Ottawa, Windsor (twice), Winnipeg, Hamilton and basically almost every city in the Maritimes/Southern Quebec/Southern Ontario broke their all-time March high. The only major city (in Eastern Canada) not to break all-time records was Toronto.

-Montreal's 4 earliest 20C+ days: March 18, 2012, March 19, 2012, March 20, 2012, March 21, 2012... and we're still not done! :grrr:

-8 consecutive days of 20C+ in Windsor now (with more to come): obviously a record for March... the last time they had such long streak of 20C+ days in April was in 1990, from the 23th to the 30th!!! If they make it to 9 consecutive days tomorrow (99% chance of happening), we would have to go back to April 1985 between the 18th-26th to find such long streak (and remember that's in April not in March).

-The record for consecutive days with broken high record in Montreal is 5 in 1945 (April 9th-April 13th). We're past midnight and the temperature of 17C is breaking the record of 15.0C from 1946  :ggreen: so that's the 5th consecutive record we break and we tie 1945. March 2012 can now be considered as the biggest heat wave in Montreal's history. :sun: :sun: :sun:

Discussion
--------------------------------------------------------
Mild southwest winds combined with generally sunny skies led to a few
Records being broken in Southern Manitoba this afternoon...

New old record records
Location record record year began
--------------------------------------------------------
Gretna 17.4 12.8 1957 1956
Pinawa 15.0 12.5 1987 1964
Fisher Branch 13.7 11.0 1987 1978
Melita 13.7 11.0 1994 1993

The hot spot in all of Canada today was Sprague, which at 17.5 did
not quite beat it's old record of 17.8 set in 1945. Winnipeg's high
was 16.1, a few degrees shy of the record of 19.4 set in 1938.

Many more records are expected to fall on Thursday, with
Temperatures in Southern Manitoba expected to soar into the
Low 20's.

Missing Collingwood and Owen Sound ON I think. I cut out the parts that were repeated from previous statements (exactly the same). For Manitoba some records fell but nothing crazy. I except way more tomorrow there. As for the absurd statement highlighted in brown, that is definitely false and I have no idea why that was stated. 17.5ºC is not higher than 28.8ºC.

topicana wrote:Petawawa ON 28.8C 84F **warmest spot in Canada**

5 Things about this list: Petawawa ON is insane because it broke the record by around 17ºC and was about 25ºC above average, that list has the most "Warmest March temperature" records yet, is there any difference between "**all time March record**" and "**March record**" or are they the same? Never seen that before. Collingwood ON should be on the list but I don't know why its not on EC's list either because it easily broke the record as well. Seeing Fredericton NB at 27.1C is just downright scary. Yes certainly the weather has gone bonkers...in a good way :D .

You had 2 mistakes, Fredericton was misspelled and a strange "É" character was placed in a statement after the record.

CrazyC83 wrote:I wonder if anyone has broken an APRIL record so far, so that March now has a higher extreme than April?

If you mean all time April record then yes, definitely. Some places in northern Ontario or even Manitoba have most likely done it multiple times already. I don't know of any time in recorded history that has happened.

Nicko999 wrote:-The record for consecutive days with broken high record in Montreal is 5 in 1945 (April 9th-April 13th). We're past midnight and the temperature of 17C is breaking the record of 15.0C from 1946  :ggreen: so that's the 5th consecutive record we break and we tie 1945.

Yeah that's happened a few times as well in this event, the low beating the record high for the day. That just shows why this event blows even March 1945 away...the minimum temperatures are way way higher than that event based on many of the stations' readings. What really would be good is to see a minimum temp. for a day beat the all time April record for said station  .

I think I'll add some more tweets on Page 3.
