Severe Thunderstorms here in Boca Raton last night. Very strong straight line winds I would say between 60-70mph. Completely stripped the fronds off three royal palms and bent street signs.

This is a storm report about 3 miles south of me

0348 64 1 E PARKLAND BROWARD FL 2631 8022 A THUNDERSTORM PRODUCED A WIND GUST OF 64 MPH AT THE INTERSECTION OF WEST HILLSBORO AND SOUTH POWERLINE DRIVE NEAR PARKLAND (MFL)

Total rainfall at my north Jax home ended up being 2.87 inches from yesterday's soaker. This was by far the most single day rainfall event that I have had at my home since last August. It was just what the doctor/weather gods ordered for our parched area of NE FL for sure. Also, thankfully, we did not have any tornado or severe wether reports in Jax yesterday The NWS office here did issue a tornado warning briefly for parts of Jacksonville as the mets there watched radar possibly detecting tornadoes across areas of NE FL yesterday afternoon. I briefly saw some pea-sized hail in very heavy thurderstorms yesterday afternoon, but nothing else other than the torrential rains.

I've recorded an astonishing 6 inches of rain here since MLK day. drought cancel here. it is just plain wet. and yesterday's squall line was mega cool for the weather geek. i watched it barrel in from work in north st pete and it got dark as night at 5pm with visibility dropping to under 100 yards in a sideways carwash. it reminded me of a midwestern derecho in the summer. awesome! still waiting for that warm, dry la nina winter... maybe next year?

Up here in Tallahassee, the direct opposite is true. We are in true need of rain here. Tallahassee is 10.58" below normal since october. We have been much cooler than normal though, which I am loving!!! We need a good 24 hour soaker or two, and a lot less london fog and mist days. It seems like it has been very wet here, but in all not much has actually precipitated out of the atmosphere.

Yes, the NWS was way wrong on forecasting drought conditions for Florida the past few months - I love it when God throws them a curveball (Spring training is just around the corner)...

Feels Spring-like here in South Florida at this hour, though it'll likely be windy through tomorrow due to the intense low to our distant NW...

State Wide Tornado Drill: 10:10am EST
From http://www.floridadisaster.org/kids/index2.htm:

"If a tornado were to strike tomorrow, would you be prepared? Would you know what actions to take? In Florida, tornadoes strike all too often. Planning and practice are keys to tornado safety. Whether at home, school or business, everyone should have a plan in place for severe weather. The tornado drill gives Floridians a chance to test their plans and determine whether or not they are prepared. This is especially true in schools.

A very important part of Florida Severe Weather Awareness Week is the statewide tornado drill on Wednesday, February 2nd. On the morning of the drill, all participants should consider themselves under a Tornado Watch. A watch means you should monitor the weather and be prepared to go a safe place in the event of a warning. At approximately 10:10 AM EST (9:10 AM CST) on Wednesday, February 2nd, the National Weather Service forecast offices serving Florida will transmit a practice tornado warning which will be broadcast as a "Routine Weekly Test" through NOAA Weather Radio.

In real life, you must listen for the watch and warning messages and determine the threat to your area. Then you should decide which protective actions to take. Important: When in doubt, take immediate protective action!

Plans may vary depending on the number of adults present, how vulnerable your location is, communications and a host of other factors. All Floridians should use the tornado drill to develop and practice their plans. Being prepared saves lives!

If actual severe weather threatens Florida on February 2nd, the drill will be postponed until Friday, February 4th."

2011 Severe Weather Week for Florida

Main Site:http://www.floridadisaster.org/kids/index2.htm

Tallahassee NWS:http://www.srh.noaa.gov/tlh/
Jacksonville NWS:http://www.srh.noaa.gov/jax/
Melbourne NWS:http://www.srh.noaa.gov/mlb/
Tampa NWS:http://www.srh.noaa.gov/tbw/
Miami NWS:http://www.srh.noaa.gov/mfl/
Key West NWS:http://www.srh.noaa.gov/key/

"The focus on Monday, January 31 is lightning.
With an average of 1.4 million cloud-to-ground lightning strikes each year, no other state in the country experiences more lightning strikes than Florida. Lightning is very dangerous and can travel as far as 10 miles from a thunderstorm! So while it may not be raining at your location, lightning can still reach you. The key to remaining safe from a lightning strike is to keep an eye to the sky and watch for darkening skies on the horizon along with distant rumbles of thunder. The two main tips to remember about lightning safety are: being outside is never safe during a thunderstorm and if you can hear thunder, then you are close enough to be struck by lightning! Always remember the 30/30 rule: Go inside if you hear thunder within 30 seconds of a lightning flash. Wait at least 30 minutes after you hear thunder before going back outside.

The focus on Tuesday, February 1 is Marine Hazards and Rip Currents.
Year-round warm weather and abundant sunshine attract millions of people to Florida to dive, snorkel, swim, ski, fish, cruise, or sail each year. Fair weather and fine seas treat Florida beachgoers to very agreeable conditions most of the time. However, weather and water can change rapidly. Dangerous rip currents, waves, lightning, and waterspouts are among the marine hazards facing anyone who enjoys Florida’s beaches. Rip currents are especially dangerous to swimmers because they can pull unprepared swimmers away from shore and into deeper offshore waters.

The focus on Wednesday, February 2 is Tornadoes and Thunderstorms.
Thunderstorms are one of the most exciting types of weather and Florida has more of them than anywhere else in the United States and North America. All thunderstorms are considered dangerous because they contain lightning and can also produce damaging winds, heavy rain which may cause flooding, tornadoes and hail. Florida tornadoes come in all shapes and sizes, and can occur year-round, although most occur in the summer during the afternoon. Florida is also home to nearly 300 waterspouts each year, which are tornadoes that occur over water.

The National Weather Service and the Florida Division of Emergency Management will conduct the statewide Tornado Drill at 10:10 a.m. Eastern Time (9:10 a.m. Central Time), on Wednesday, February 2, 2011. Floridians are asked to consider themselves under a tornado watch during the morning of February 2, 2011. A Tornado Watch means that you should closely monitor the weather and be prepared to go to a safe place in the event of a tornado warning. Once the drill begins you should consider yourself in a Tornado Warning. A Tornado Warning means that a tornado has been sighted or has been picked up on radar in your area. This means that you need to take shelter immediately in a safe sturdy structure. Even if you do not participate in the morning drill, all schools, families and businesses are encouraged to talk about their tornado safety plan that day.

The focus on Thursday, February 3 is Hurricanes and Flooding.
The Atlantic hurricane season officially begins on June 1st and continues through November 30th. Although the number of tropical storms and hurricanes typically peaks during August and September, it is important to remember that Florida can be impacted by tropical weather systems any time during the six-month-long season. Hurricanes and tropical storms can bring very dangerous weather to areas near the coast, including strong winds, storm surge and coastal flooding, flooding from heavy rain, and tornadoes. For those away from the immediate coastline, inland flooding and tornadoes are often the most hazardous impacts from these systems.

The focus on Friday, February 4 is Temperature Extremes and Wildfires.
While wildfires can start at any time of the year, Florida sees a peak of activity during the early part of the year – beginning in January and continuing until the onset of more frequent rain during the wet season, usually in early to mid-June. A typical year in Florida will see over 4,600 fires burn nearly 110,000 acres of land. Florida is also home to a wide variety of temperatures that can reach dangerous levels. The hottest temperature ever recorded in Florida was 109 degrees Fahrenheit and the coldest temperature recorded in Florida was minus 2 degrees Fahrenheit."

...HIGH SURF ADVISORY IN EFFECT UNTIL 6 PM EST THIS EVENING...

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN TAMPA BAY RUSKIN HAS ISSUED A
HIGH SURF ADVISORY...WHICH IS IN EFFECT UNTIL 6 PM EST THIS
EVENING.

WAVES AND SURF: HIGH SURF WILL AFFECT COASTAL AREAS OF WEST
CENTRAL AND SOUTHWEST FLORIDA THROUGH THE DAY. THIS WILL ALSO
CREATE STRONG RIP CURRENTS AT AREA BEACHES. ANYONE PLANNING
BEACH ACTIVITIES SHOULD USE EXTREME CAUTION.

A RIP CURRENT IS A 10 TO 30 YARD WIDE CHANNEL OF WATER THAT CAN
PULL EVEN A STRONG SWIMMER INTO DEEPER WATER.

TO AVOID GETTING CAUGHT IN A RIP CURRENT...SWIM AT GUARDED
BEACHES AND HEED THE ADVICE OF THE BEACH PATROL. AT UNGUARDED
BEACHES AND NEAR PIERS...JETTIES...AND INLETS...DO NOT GO INTO THE

IF CAUGHT IN THE SEAWARD PULL OF A RIP CURRENT...DO NOT ATTEMPT
TO MOVE DIRECTLY TOWARD SHORE. INSTEAD...MOVE SIDEWAYS ACROSS THE
RIP CURRENT UNTIL THE PULL EASES. ANOTHER METHOD OF ESCAPE IS TO
LET THE RIP CURRENT PULL YOU SEAWARD 50 TO 100 YARDS...WHERE THE
FORCE WEAKENS. THEN...SWIM TOWARD THE BEACH AT AN ANGLE AWAY FROM
THE CURRENT.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A HIGH SURF ADVISORY IS ISSUED WHEN DANGEROUS WATER ACTION IS
EXPECTED ALONG THE COAST. THIS INCLUDES ROUGH SURF...LARGE
BREAKING WAVES...RIP CURRENTS...AND STRONG UNDERTOW.

BEACH GOERS ARE URGED TO HEED LIFEGUARD WARNINGS.
