That's shear - the sum of the winds going in different directions. For that much shear to be occuring, there would have to be at least 102kt winds in each direction, or it could be as you stated, in which the winds were blowing a full 204 kts right next to a patch of 0kt winds. 102kts is what I used to say at least F2.

Don't know yet... but it sounds big. We won't know how bad until the sun comes up and we actually see the damage.

A 'tornado emergency' is used when a confirmed strong tornado is moving into a highly populated area.

My guess on the Springfield IL tornado is F3 at this point based on damage reports. However, it is too early to tell.

Way too early -- not to say you're wrong by any means. We'll prob see a prelim rating by sundown tomorrow with a final rating on Tues or Wed -- later if it's a violent one.

Tornado Watch 79 likely to be issued for northern Indiana and southwestern Michigan soon.

Probably to southeastern Michigan, northern Ohio and southwestern Ontario before dawn.

Ok, I'm in southwestern Ontario. Is there a tornado threat tonight? I haven't heard anything about it, and I do not own a weather radio. When should I be alert for storms?

Dang...both Branson and Jefferson City MO are likely seeing tornadoes very near to them at this time. So many populated places hit by today's major outbreak ::shakes head:: -- I hope we made it thru today without too many fatalities, although I fear we may not have.

I figured that it was too early to know the intensity of the tornado.

This outbreak is a pretty bad one. Is it large enough to be called "historical"? I really don't know much about tornadoes (not as much as other weather events), so I wouldn't know.

Early warning systems saved countless lives. I think we played a role in it!
