People do complain about the coverage. It does save lives tho. When severe weather is in the area, I switch between TV stations KCTV5 and KMBC TV9. I like the chief meteorologist better on KCTV5 but KMBC TV9 has a great helicopter guy who knows how to chase storms.

I tend to take matters into my own hands when it comes to storms here, making my own storm predictions and track projections. Unfortunately I do not work for any media outlets.

Even in a PDS situation here, radio and TV stations will never even break in during commercials. The only time it gets any coverage is during the regularly scheduled newscasts. That is even true for big city TV stations.

In the larger cities, radio stations can be somewhat more reliable.

The last PDS here was in May 2003, which produced one F3 and a handful of other weak tornadoes in rural areas. The most memorable ones I can remember were in April 1996 (an F4 and an F3 in southern Ontario with others reported) and July 1995 (I was hit with an F2 tornado myself one night - and I was the only one that heard it)

I do remember the April 1996 F4 and F3 in Wellington County, Ontario. We had a tornado warning during my birthday party for the Waterloo Region. I remember it was on the news all evening, and the following weekend we drove out to Arthur to see the damage because I was so excited about it.

Growing up in KC, I can verify KCTV has a TON of coverage. I'm all for the coverage, but my only negative comments toward KCTV's coverage is the things that come out of Katie's (chief met) mouth. She's gets a little overboard and tends to overscare and/or overhype storms. Sometimes, I think she needs to relax. As for the helicopter coverage... that irritates me. As a meteorologist who deals heavily with the aviation field, someone who flies a helo near storms--especially tornadic storms--should have their license pulled. It's just plain stupid. ...and to broadcast that stupidity on TV......

Tornado in Springfield, MO at about 12:30am on March 13, 2006. You can't see much but you can hear it.

I do agree that she does go over the edge with things on those storms, but KCTV5 was the only station covering storms for a bit too. Channel 9 and the other local stations (I've lived in KC for 6 years now and I can't remember the NBC affiliate....speaking of them, they were having some "fun" learning their new expensive toys on the fly during this event) cut back to programming while KCTV5 was on the air until all cells moved out of their viewing area. Of course, that usually coincided with another batch of cells forming and moving through the area.

I guarantee you that if the Kansas/Texas Big 12 Championship game was not on ESPN, some of the idiots in KC would have called up and complained to KCTV5 about their coverage. Heck, there probably WERE idiots that called up and complained about the coverage. I remember people writing KCTV5 after the 5-4-03 storms saying that they wanted their TV shows on instead.....well, I huddled in my storm shelter with a battery operated TV and was watching the coverage at that time. With some of the damage we got in the KC metro that day, the combined coverage (even the idiot chopper coverage....which really made me believe that this wasn't just some Doppler-indicated warning...but made me see the real thing unfolding live) saved lives that day.

So, I think the KCTV5 chief met has to be someone sensational in this. There are people who believe that they can ride out storms in manufactured homes. There are people who still believe that tornadoes can't hit them. She's trying to save lives and if that means "hyping" up the storm, then so be it.

Is anyone else a bit surprised that we don't have any isolated F4 damage confirmed?

THE TORNADO PICKED UP THE CAR AND THREW IT INTO A

I honestly think that when the NWS in Plesant Hill makes their news conference, they will announce one or more F4s. I just have a feeling looking at the damage pics.

Never mind, they already finished their assesments apparently and they were all f2's. Guess there werent any f4's reported with this outbreak.
