Attention Georgia wx buffs: new archive page at WSFO FFC

If you are interested in past years weather records for Atlanta, Athens, Macon, and Columbus....the NWS forecast office in Peachtree City has added something to their site that will thrill you (as it has me!).

They've added a new historical weather records page, that you can access and search for the weather data for any date back into the 19th century (Atlanta's records began in September 1878).

**check out December 1886 for Atlanta....between Dec 3-6, over 2.00" of precip fell with temps mostly below freezing. It amounted to 6" of snow and significant freezing rain and sleet on top of the snow -- the worst (by far) pre-Christmas winter storm in Georgia history (in the NW corner of Georgia, 14" snow fell at Rome and over 18" at Chattanooga, TN. :o

Nice link! How about 1985 where the record low got down to -8 at the airport!! :o Even though I was pretty young, I can remember that well. We were around -10 here, and the schools had to close for a couple days. Thick ice got on the windows which was quite a site to see!

Hey, GAstorm. I remember that Arctic outbreak on January 21st, 1985 as well ... 6º in CHS ... and some amazing all time record lows set on that day ...

Here's a page I created with the help of reanalysis maps from Plymouth State and some detailed records that fell on that date...

Thanks for the link SF! Those maps are really good at showing the arctic air breaking off from Canada! Do you think this year will bring a stronger arctic outbreak than last year? I'm not hoping for anything like '85, but it seems likely that we could set some records!
