Heavy Rains Storm Through Oahu

#1 Postby senorpepr » Fri Dec 26, 2003 8:14 pm

HONOLULU -- The National Weather Service dropped a flash-flood warning for Oahu Monday morning after thunderstorms raged over the island Sunday.

Forecasters issued the alert at 12:54 p.m. Sunday. Radar picked up heavy shower activity over the Koolau Mountain Range and Windward Oahu. Residents in Central Oahu reported hearing thunder and seeing lightning starting at about 1:30 p.m.

A flash-flood warning means that there is an imminent chance of flooding.

Heavy rains pounded the central plains again in the evening after a few hours of light shower activity. Thousands of customers, including residents in Mililani Mauka, lost power Sunday evening, according to Hawaiian Electric Co. officials.

Flooding conditions prompted police to close several roadways Sunday night. Police shut down the H-1 Freeway in both directions near the Middle Street overpass a little after 10 p.m. Sunday. Landslides and debris on the roads also forced officials to close Kamehameha Highway near the Dole Plantation and Pali Highway.

Oahu 24-hour Rainfall Totals (as of 11 a.m. Monday)
Waihee Pump Station 7.54 inches
Schofield's East Range 10.71 inches
Wilson Tunnel 5 inches
Mililani 8.21 inches

Pacific Palisades 5.27 inches

Kauai 24-hour Rainfall Totals (as of 11 a.m. Monday)
