thunderstorms now and later today

#1 Postby WXBUFFJIM » Sat Mar 20, 2004 10:27 am

Thunderstorms have developed over the past few hours across southern Illinois and extending south and west towards the Bootheel of Missouri. These storms are considered elevated with a minimal severe weather threat. However recently a few severe thunderstorm warnings have been issued across southern Illinois. Union County, southern Illinois until 9:30 am and Franklin County, southern Illinois until 9:45 am. The main threat with this broken line of thunderstorms will be large hail. Spotters near Franklin County, Illinois reported dime sized hail with this storm.

Later today, a cold front will plow through the Ohio Valley and middle Mississippi Valley. In addition, an upper trough is digging south and east through the Midwest and into the Ohio valley. Along this front and area of strong jet stream energy, showers and thunderstorms are expected to become severe with the main threat being damaging winds from east central Kentucky southward through Tennessee. Later tonight, expect on the tail end of the front more thunderstorms with large hail and damaging winds possible from Dallas northeastward through the Little Rock area.

An active day today.
