NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
1035 AM EDT TUE APR 13 2004
THE NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER HAS ISSUED A
TORNADO WATCH FOR PORTIONS OF
EASTERN NORTH CAROLINA
SOUTHEASTERN VIRGINIA
COASTAL WATERS
EFFECTIVE THIS TUESDAY MORNING AND AFTERNOON FROM 1035 AM UNTIL
400 PM EDT.
TORNADOES...HAIL TO 1 INCH IN DIAMETER...THUNDERSTORM WIND GUSTS
TO 70 MPH...AND DANGEROUS LIGHTNING ARE POSSIBLE IN THESE AREAS.
THE TORNADO WATCH AREA IS ALONG AND 50 STATUTE MILES EITHER SIDE
OF A LINE FROM 10 MILES EAST NORTHEAST OF NORFOLK VIRGINIA TO 20
MILES WEST SOUTHWEST OF JACKSONVILLE NORTH CAROLINA.
REMEMBER...A TORNADO WATCH MEANS CONDITIONS ARE FAVORABLE FOR
TORNADOES AND SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS IN AND CLOSE TO THE WATCH AREA.
PERSONS IN THESE AREAS SHOULD BE ON THE LOOKOUT FOR THREATENING
WEATHER CONDITIONS AND LISTEN FOR LATER STATEMENTS AND POSSIBLE
WARNINGS.
DISCUSSION...VERY MOIST AND MODERATELY UNSTABLE AIR MASS ONSHORE E
OF WEDGE FRONT ERN NC AND INTO SERN CORNER OF VA. WITH APPROACH OF
VIGOROUS MID LEVEL JET MAX FROM GA SHEAR PROFILES ARE VERY FAVORABLE
FOR LOW TOPPED SUPERCELLS IN WARM SECTOR. DAMAGING WINDS AND
ISOLATED TORNADOES ARE LIKELY WITH ANY SUPERCELLS THAT DEVELOP AS
STORMS MOVE RAPIDLY NEWD THIS AFTERNOON ACROSS WATCH AREA.
AVIATION...TORNADOES AND A FEW SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS WITH HAIL
SURFACE AND ALOFT TO 1 INCH. EXTREME TURBULENCE AND SURFACE WIND
GUSTS TO 60 KNOTS. A FEW CUMULONIMBI WITH MAXIMUM TOPS TO 500.
MEAN STORM MOTION VECTOR 23040.

I'm doubting it... I don't think the atmosphere is too stable in that area. Anyone know the lapse rates for DCA? My house is just outside of that watch by 10 miles.... and a storm just moved through. Can't wait for a decent thunderstorm here..

I think you meant that the atmosphere is not too UNstable, not stable. But we will have to see, LIs are forecasted to be below 0 here in DC soon, and LWX issued a Short Term Forecast for storms containing pea-sized hail through early afternoon. My forecasters up here like Bob Ryan and Topper Shutt also suggest the potential for severe weather. But we shall see...

thats right.. it was to stable.. but take a look at the line of storms off the coast now... wow.. they just exploded once they got off shore... i was ready to go though... cameras charged and tripod latched to the dash.. but nothing...just seems spring is on hold... what does one have to do to get some lightning around here??? lol...
