From First coast news....

JACKSONVILLE, FL -- Doppler radar is indicating a tornado 6 miles south of Hillard. So far there are no visual reports from the ground. Doppler shows the tornado would be short lived. But damageing winds above 60 mph are still posible. Callahan could get hail. The severe thunderstorm is moving east at 35 mph. Tornado warning until 6:45 p.m. in Western Nassau county.

Severe weather is occurring across most of SE Georgia and in parts of Nassau. Ware county is still getting pounded around Manor and storms will stretch from Waycross to Brunswick. The severe thunderstorm warning is in effect until 7 pm for areas near Folkston and Yulee. Storms will move to Amelia Island around 7 pm. Less intense rain is moving into Western Clay and storms grow stronger north along HWY 301.

Normally in Florida you don't hear reports of Tornado touchdowns with the tornado warnings.. you just hear "a tornado my form.." or.. "be on the lookout for changing weather conditions"..

I think the last time they reported a tornado on the ground here was either the 1998 outbreak or during Tropical Storm Gabrielle.. Because I know my neighborhood got slammed by Gabrielle

Alot of times it can be convective interactions which enhance localized shear and lead to tornadoes in an environment which synoptically speaking is not all that favorable for their development.

e.g. High CAPE and low vertical shear through a deep layer (High Bulk-Richardson number). and/or no change in wind direction with height-- among other things.
