Several tornadoes in South Carolina cause heavy damage...

#1 Postby Stormsfury » Mon Sep 27, 2004 6:12 pm

Hardest hit area appears to be Alcolu, SC (near Manning in Claredon County) ... prelim reports estimate to be an F1, but the tornado hit several mobile homes, 2 destroyed with 4 injuries, and the Alcolu Head Start School, with a unknown number of minor injuries ...

Other areas hit include Berkeley County (Pineville, SC) prelim report of an F1 tornado which damaged mobile homes in the area ... and many trees down reported by law enforcement ...

Just off the wire, a tornado 8 miles ENE of Newberry, SC, updated information for tornado event in the vicinity of State Road 34, US HWY 176, and Big Pine Rd ... One home was destroyed, 4 others damaged, numerous trees and power lines are down ... visual confirmation of the tornado by an individual as it hit the destroyed home ... fortunately, no injuries ...

Ugh...these storms keep on ticking. First Frances had a big-time tornado outbreak, then it was Ivan, now Jeanne.

Ugh....

And to turn this around..
what is the nature of such tornadoes.
I know that most of the ones here are so short-lived that they are hard to spot in advance.

Berkeley County is just east of Charleston... Clarendon County is between Columbia and Charleston just east of I-26.

Actually... those two towns SF posted are only 30-40 miles apart(Pineville is in the northern part of Berkeley which borders Clarendon).

hurricanes are the worlds most powerful storms, far eclipsing even the most sizeable tornadoes in damage, but a very large F5 tornado is indeed a wonder of nature, both beautiful and absolutely devastatingly deadly and unpredictable. I think the sheer power and perfection of any large force of nature is cause for admiration. To be both feared and respected, but also awe inspired. That is hte nature of a weather enthusiast.

Correct... and POSSIBLE that it may have come from the same feeder band or even the same parent embedded supercell ...

30-40 miles is ...
that's quite a distance for non-feederband tornadoes, but since that is a feederband.. makes sense.

I can see where Innotech is coming from. Witnessing several tornadoes in my lifetime has helped me appreciate the destructive, but yet strangely beautiful and a organized phenomena of nature, such as hurricanes, blizzards, lightning, and even hail ... oddly enough, in Wyoming, a severe thunderstorm capable of producing one inch hail has cropped up (indicated by the larger green triangle ...

Uh oh, severe thunderstorm warning for Lexington County, SC near the Gaston area (near Columbia), doppler radar indicates a severe thunderstorm capable of producing damaging winds ...

Doppler radar indicated two MESOs near the Aiken, Lexington County border moving NORTH at 35 mph ...
