My brother-in-law is a tug boat captain, and he said a lot of this is due to the river being so high.

DONALDSONVILLE -- A ship collision shut down part of the Mississippi River to traffic on Thursday morning as Coast Guard authorities investigated the cause of the accident.
A tow boat and two barges sank in the river after colliding with a ship. Four crewmen from the tow boat were thrown into the river and were later rescued.
Part of the river was closed to traffic as a precaution, but the area will reopen once authorities determine whether the sunken vessels pose a threat to other ships.
The Coast Guard says there was no oil spill and no hazardous material involved.
