KC Weather Today

#1 Postby simplykristi » Wed May 11, 2005 5:03 pm

Hi All,
When I left for work this morning, the forecast called for partly sunny and high of 88. No rain forecased until tonight. Well, it has been storming off and on here in KC all afternoon. What happened, forecasters?

Even hail reported at Kansas City Airport, and a record 2.35 inches at St Joseph MO today.

You are right, Kristi, about the forecasters not being correct this morning. Even the NWS had Pt. Cloudy skies for this afternoon down there, with thunderstorms TONIGHT. That was in there early morning issuance. Obviously, they changed their tune towards late morning.

I was listening to KCMO-AM radio's live stream on the Net. It was very marginal coverage though. I expected wall-to-wall coverage with reporters in the field, but instead it was Dr. Laura with cut ins. :(

Anyway, I also checked out some of the citycams, particularly KCTV 5's, and they were VERY impressive and wicked-looking.

Mainly, the forecast challenge for the KC area today was a weak mesostationary front that was further south than the main stationary boundary. Nonetheless, with the strong low-level jet pumping moist air, conditions were just right for convection to fire off of this secondary bounadry.

As I was leaving work in downtown KCMO, the skies were dark and threatening. That was at 4:15 PM. It was starting to rain.

We ended up getting over 2 1/2 inches of rain from Thursday night thru yesterday morning. It was much. I took a couple of quick pics of the storm as it was coming in Thurs. night. How do I post them?
