Interesting to note that the majority of the records are in states that are experiencing a drought

The previous record high for Dallas on Jan 1 was 79 degrees set in 1910

Crazy! The only good thing I can say is at least those in Texas, Louisiana, etc. living in tents aren't freezing at night.

That just means it gets really warm during the day. Here in Austin - it's cold at night - in the 30's and 40's mostly except last night when it was warmer. We even had a light freeze one night when it was in the 80's during the day.

And the drought ... it's warm and dry during the day - we had a dense fog advisory the other night th! (New Year's Eve night)

We're not having the mass of fires they're having futher north, but we have a lovely mix of smoke and cedar pollen to contend with...

Dallas sets another record high today, topping out at 84 degrees. The previous record was set in 1997  Added to that, 4 of the next 5 days are expected to have winds gusting in excess of 20mph

LIFE IN YELLOWKNIFE

I know! Seriously, Yellowknife just completed their warmest December ever on record and I know those folks are ecstatic. LOL
I found this from CBC News:-

Warmer than usual temperatures have created road closures, ferry delays and flooding dangers throughout the Northwest Territories.

Yellowknife has experienced its warmest December on record.

Kids enjoy the milder outdoor temperatures in the North
Usually at this time of year Yellowknifers are braving average temperatures of -25 to -30 C.

"Absolutely amazing," said Lindsey Boulivar, a biathlete on Canada's national team. "It's unbelievable how warm it is and there's so much snow. It's just great."

Boulivar says the relatively warm weather is perfect as she trains for the Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy.

Throughout December temperatures have been above normal, with climatologists explaining that the warming trend is because of mild Pacific air making its way north.
But authorities warn the warm weather can lead to accidents, especially when travelling on any of the lakes surrounding the N.W.T. capital.

"We have had reports of areas out there that have open water in areas that have been frozen over in previous years, so it's not a normal freezing situation and we ask people to use extreme caution," said deputy fire chief Chucker Dewar.

That means the warmer weather could also be a problem for the N.W.T.'s three diamond mines.

The mines depend on the 500 kilometres of ice roads, built over the territory's frozen lakes, that allow them to truck in enough supplies for a full year.

Construction is supposed to begin this month, but the warm weather may delay construction.
Trapper Lawrence Casaway also says the weather changes aren't a good thing.

He points to the disruption of animal habitats; the caribou are leaving and new animals like grizzly bears are showing up, he says.
"There was another white fox here, too. They are all from the Barren Lands so they are confused. They are going all over and that's not supposed to happen. It's the weather that's doing that," said Casaway.

One was missing from that list. It was later determined that Cincinnati, Ohio broke their record for the date at 64 degrees. The original record was 63 set back in 1897.
