THU JAN 5 2006
It was not just another relentlessly overcast day Thursday. It was another relentlessly overcast day for the record books.
Weather observers at Buffalo Niagara International Airport recorded zero minutes of sunshine Thursday, setting a record of 13 consecutive days in which there was "zero percent" sunshine.
Observers listed zero minutes of sunshine for both Wednesday and Thursday. Bits of sun were seen at various spots around Buffalo Tuesday, and a minute of sunshine was officially noted at the airport, but the weather service said that this was not enough to qualify as a full 1 percent.
The previous record of 12 days without sun was set in 1902 and 1920.
Historically, Buffalo's cloudiest months are December (27 percent of the available sunshine), November (29 percent) and January (31 percent).
The streak was being broken on Friday with sunshine finally breaking its way through the clouds.
In Toronto, just on the other side of the lake, Friday was only the second mainly sunny day in the last 3 weeks (since December 16) ... the only other day to record any substantial sunshine was on December 30th 2005.
