Question for hurricane and winter weather enthusiasts

#1 Postby GAStorm » Thu Jul 31, 2003 5:11 pm

Just wondering can an active hurricane season be a prelude to big winter storms in the south? I think I heard somewhere that the activity in the Gulf can be an early sign of bigger storm systems down the road. It seems to make sense, but I didn't know if you could tie the two together? Anyone have any input on this?

Well, I definitely can say with no certainty that the same pattern conducive for strong hurricanes sometime proclude winter storms for the Southeast ...

Hmmm, let's review ... Hurricane Hugo in 1989 followed by the Coastal SC/NC Snowstorm in December 1989. Hurricanes Dennis, Floyd, and Irene in 1999 followed by the January 24th-25th, 2000 Great NC (Raleigh) Snowstorm ... correlation? ... maybe, but I can't put anything scientific to this, yet.

Definitely seems like a weird occurance to have a coastal snowstorm after Hugo. Thanks for the info SF!
