U.S. weather station surveys

#1 Postby Extremeweatherguy » Sun Dec 30, 2007 8:37 pm

On June 4th, 2007, a project was launched to survey all the weather stations in the United States to determine if they are in proper positions and are setup to the correct national weather service standards. The results, so far, are interesting to say the least. It seems as though quite a few stations are way too close to artificial heating sources and/or are setup in incorrect positions. Hopefully these stations will be corrected soon, because this could potentially have a significant impact on how we measure climate change over the years.

For a list of the stations already surveyed, see the following link: http://www.surfacestations.org/USHCN_stationlist.htm

And here is the link where I originally found this survey at in the first place: http://wattsupwiththat.wordpress.com/test/

Also, here is the link to the actual home website devoted to this project: http://www.surfacestations.org/

BTW, for an idea of some of the ridiculous setups these stations are in, check out the follwing pictures from the Titusville, FL reporting station...

...yeah, pretty hard to believe isn't it. Anyone who thinks readings from that location are "accurate" are definitely kidding themselves. Let's just hope this survey leads to some changes in the future so we no longer have to see sights like this!

I've often wondered how "accurate" some of th ereports we see are. There are many parameters that can skew a good report, but that Titusville set up is completely out to lunch. Please don't tell me that was an official NWS set up!!!
