Rare Night Time Waterspout Reported

#1 Postby Southernmost Weather » Fri Aug 08, 2003 11:07 pm

Around 9p we had a series of strong thunderstorms move into the area. One of the things it produced was a rare night time waterspout. The National Weather Service office reports it was seen by mariners anchored off Key West to the northwest. The waterspout position was reported in the Northwest Shipping Channel and was heading northeast. There was no mention if it was a fair weather or tornadic waterspout but because of the strong thunderstorms, my educated guess is that it was a tornadic waterspout. Key West radar images available to the public at the time did show any waterspout signatures. The thundestorms dumped 0.73" of pcpn into my collector in a 30-minute time frame.
