Hurricane Hanna (I don't think it was nominated in August? I know Gustav is ineligible)

Without offence meant, while I fully agree Ike was devastating and is probably a front-runner, how can you say there's "no other choice" when there's also Gustav, or a category-5 equivalent typhoon in Jangmi to choose from?

No offense meant and yes I was directly affected by Ike, but did any of the others you mention cause over 8 million people to be without power and over 50 billion dollars in damage(estimated) and directly affect initially over 5 million people at one time?

I think that the destruction from Fay, Gustav, Hanna, and Ike in Hispaniola and Cuba should be mentioned, although all 4 probably cannot be nominated together.

Typhoon Jangmi made landfall at around that intensity (high cat4-low cat5 equivalent) and dumped over 40 inches of rain, so surely it's at least comparable. No it did not cause as much damage — but that's because Taiwan's infrastructure is built to withstand major hits.

My point was that Ike was not the 'only choice', there were others. I don't question, nor have disregard for, what Ike did.

Typhoon Jangmi - strongest typhoon in 13 years and directly affected up to 100 million people (60 million in Taiwan and tens of millions more in coastal Fujian and Zhejiang.)

Gustav was nominated in August, so it would be ineligible.

One reason I asked the question is because I was not aware of what Jangmi had done as far as the destruction and number of lives affected. I was aware of how strong it was and that it had hit Taiwan.
