Weeks of flooding create more refugees in Bolivia

#1 Postby senorpepr » Wed Jan 14, 2004 2:34 am

LA PAZ, Bolivia, Jan. 11 (UPI) -- Continuing floods have left thousands homeless in southern Bolivia, with more refugees appearing every day, authorities said Sunday.

The newspaper Los Tiempos reported 40,000 people are affected, with only about 6,000 being housed in 16 shelters, visited Saturday by President Carlos Mesa Gisbert.

Existing shelters have no more room but people continue to stream into more developed areas from the countryside.

"It is a real emergency situation; we are worried by what is happening to the people," Mesa Gisbert said following his visit to the shelters.

Rains have continued since the Chapare River burst its banks Dec. 23, damaging crops and drowning cattle.
