Storms wreak havoc in Baalbek, Lebanon

#1 Postby senorpepr » Thu Jan 29, 2004 4:46 am

Heavy rain hit the Baalbek district on Tuesday and snow was reported in towns and villages located at an altitude of 1000 meters and over.
Snow has blocked rural roads leading to the towns of Ainata, Moheidtheh, Ham and Maaraboun. However, government tractors were used all day Tuesday to clear those roads.
At 10.00 am, heavy rain fell in the Baalbek area and washed out most of the snow that had fallen the night before turning some roads into small rivers.
This caused a traffic jam on the main road and inside Baalbek itself. The bad weather closed most private and public schools in Baalbek and neighboring villages.
In a separate development, the storm that has battered the country for the past few days is expected to move away from the Mediterranean area.
The weather for Wednesday is expected to be partly cloudy. Snow would fall at altitudes of 1000 meters and over.
However, the showers and snow are expected to stop on Wednesday.
The wind is expected to blow in a southwesterly direction at a speed of between 15 to 45 kilometers per hour.
Meanwhile, the Iqlim Kharroub area in the Chouf is still without electric power supply as a result of severe damage to its power network.
