The Rural Fire Service (RFS) says Sydney could face a serious fire threat because of conditions forecast for later this week.
Commissioner Phil Koperberg says while a total fire ban has been declared for a large part of the state, high humidity has eased the situation in the metropolitan area.
But he says north-westerly winds and high temperatures predicted for Wednesday could create a critical situation, and preparations are being made.
"If it's confirmed that it's going to be bad, we'll resource the state accordingly," he said.
"We do so in conjunction with not only RFS brigades but New South Wales Fire Brigades, national parks and state forests.
"If it deteriorates, we're as ready as we ought to be."
