Three killed in avalanche in eastern Turkey

#1 Postby senorpepr » Wed Feb 25, 2004 10:43 am

DIYARBAKIR, Turkey (AFP) - Three people from the same family were killed when their house in a small southeastern Turkey village was engulfed by an avalanche of snow, a local source in the regional capital of Diyarbakir revealed.

Authorities, who were unsure how many people were in the house at the time, feared the death toll in Cakirpinar village, Batman province, could rise.

Mountainous eastern Turkey has been in the grip of sub-zero temperatures for days with record-breaking snow falls. Schools have been closed in several provinces.
