Firefighters brace for extreme danger in SE Queensland Austr

#1 Postby senorpepr » Fri Oct 15, 2004 9:17 am

Firefighters are hoping to keep bushfires within containment lines today, as the weather bureau warns the threat in south-east Queensland will reach extreme levels.

Crews worked through the night after homes and property were threatened yesterday.
Frank Stemm from Queensland Fire and Rescue says crews kept the fires under control over night at Kilcoy in the Brisbane Valley and around Mudgeeraba at the Gold Coast.

"Another area of interest was the Hinze Dam area where properties were threatened yesterday - that situation has been brought under control and within its containment lines," he said.

He says a number of other smaller outbreaks caused concern yesterday.
The weather bureau is forecasting winds of up to 30 to 40 kilometers an hour this afternoon with temperatures ranging from 33 to 36 degrees.

Property owners have been urged to contact Queensland Fire and Rescue at the first sign of any blaze so crews can be on scene as quickly as possible.

People are also being urged to take precautions including cleaning gutters and removing rubbish around buildings.
