Shake, rattle, and roll in China

#1 Postby senorpepr » Wed Oct 20, 2004 9:02 am

At least 12 people have been injured and hundreds of homes devastated after an earthquake in southwestern China.

China's official Xinhua newsagency says the tremor, measuring 5.0 on the Richter scale, struck Baoshan prefecture, home to more than 2.3 million people, in Yunnan province.

The impact was particularly strong in some suburban areas of Baoshan city.

Officials say destruction near the epicenter was considerable, with hundreds of buildings collapsing and thousands more being damaged.

More than 5,000 people have been forced to leave their homes.
