Blizzard Leaves 62 Villages Without Electricity

#1 Postby senorpepr » Sat Mar 05, 2005 9:01 pm

The last night's raging blizzard has left 62 populated areas in Moldova de-energized. The biggest damage was inflicted to the Rezina and Telenesti raions, where over 40 villages had their electricity supply upset by the disaster. In 20 villages, telephone lines were damaged.

The severe snowstorm upset traffic on some highways. By Monday morning, the thickness of snow cover reached 50 centimeters in many localities. The Department of Civil Defense and Emergencies has even reported a 1-meter snow thickness in some places.

During the night, two frost-bitten persons were delivered to the Chisinau Emergency Hospital. One of them had died by this morning.

The Chisinau Weather Center is not expecting blizzards in the near days, but the air temperature will be well below the freezing point.
