Even worse, thunderstorms sparked off by a cold front entering the region injured 14 people due to lightning at a football game.

Absolutely right guys. The storms you mentioned passed through here, caused considerable flash flooding. There were several cases of store roofs falling through in my area - thankfully no injuries. The heatwave has definitely moved on, we're struggling to reach 70 at the moment; and snow is forecast on the peaks of the Scottish mountains this weekend.

Indeed we had some quite spectacular lightning displays its a shame it came at a cost of som peoples lives and injuries  I loved the heatwave though we managed a 34.1C here :D Only managed a 29C on the hottest day of the year i think it was because the heat was localised in the south east.

It has been a strange summer when parts of the UK hit 100 F and Atlanta, GA does not get to 95 F even once.

You're not wrong there John! I was very surprised to hear about the weather in Georgia this summer; but even that doesn't compare to the UK hitting 100f!!! :D

So true. 100 F in the UK is like 115 or 120 F where I live. Truly unbelievable! :o

Was it 38.1 degrees Celsius just recently or are you referring to the record heat earlier in the summer, Stormsfury. Thanks in advance.

Yes, just to confirm: the UK record fell on 10th August when Gravesend (just to the east of London on the south side of the Thames Estuary) recorded 38.1c

However, many weather stations in the UK only produce data on a monthly basis so all figures are provisional until this has all been collated. In this particular case it was subsequently found that the highest temp recorded on the 10th was actually 38.5c (101.3f) recorded in a place called Brogdale, near Faversham on the north Kent coast - some 20 miles further east of Gravesend.
