Those Gulf of Lyon and Adriatic Lows can be murder. I remember one in the 1970's which was producing a Mistral in the south of France with gusts well in excess of 100 km/hr, totally socked in conditions in northern Italy, a tornado in Naples and thunderstorms with radar indicated tops over 18000m over the Med. I remember this because the General of the Base wanted to fly to Aviano AB in Italy in a T-39 (which had no radar in those days) and while he was insistent, his crew basically mutinied and said no way. Another General in the Philippines once took off in a 48 kt crosswind during a typhoon at Clark AB-he ordered the Base to stay open so he could leave-wound up nearly entering Red China airspace while circumnavigating the typhoon. He was so well loved (NOT) that the Command Post wanted him to crash-somehow he made it.
