Ozone hole update question

#1 Postby Suzi Q » Mon Dec 01, 2003 6:33 pm

The following was in the Houston Chronicle this morning. I am taking both meteorology and environmental science this semester and would love if someone could explain to my near addled brain how this occurred. It has been pounded into my head in both classes that the ozone depletion was ALWAYS due to human causes, as opposed to meteorological causes. I forgot to ask my env. science professor this morning and my met. teacher tends to go around some questions rather than answering them so would love some help getting this to fit in my brain.

“The seasonal “hole” in stratospheric ozone over Antarctica has filled in after reaching a record size earlier this year, according to the World Meteorological Organization. Researchers from the U.N. Agency said this year’s depletion in the ozone layer lasted longer than has been recently observed. The size of the hole peaked at 10.8 millions square miles during September, matching the record size set three years ago. Unusually cold air aloft over Antarctica during the past southern winter appears to be responsible for the return of record ozone depletion, following two years of detected improvement.

It could be since I'm starting to study for finals that I just can't process this info as I normally would so please forgive if the question is beyond ignorant.
