Dozens killed in Bangladesh tornado

#1 Postby senorpepr » Thu Apr 15, 2004 9:11 am

At least 30 people were killed and about 500 others injured when a tornado swept parts of northern Bangladesh.

Officials say the tornado tore through several villages in Mymensingh and Netrokona districts on Wednesday night, leveling houses and sending villagers literally flying.

Police originally said the winds were a seasonal storm, but weather officials have since said it was a tornado.

Police say some people were trapped under collapsed houses and uprooted trees, and some of the injured had suffered broken bones after being thrown through the air by the winds.

Officials say the death toll will be clearer by Friday, as rescue workers are still sifting through debris.
